GRATITUDE. L. M.

BOST.

[blocks in formation]

God, how end-less is thy love! Thy gifts are ev-ery even-ing new

And morn-ing mer cies from a-bove, Gen-tly dis

til like early dew.

Sel. 21.

[H. 446.

MY God, how endless is thy love!
Thy gifts are every evening new;
And morning mercies from above,
Gently distil like early dew.

2. Thou spreadst the curtain of the night,
Great Guardian of my sleeping hours;
Thy sovereign word restores the light,
And quickens all my drowsy powers.

[blocks in formation]

3. I yield my powers to thy command, WAIT, O my soul, thy Maker's will,

To thee I consecrate my days;
Perpetual blessings from thy hand,
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

[blocks in formation]

Tumultuous passions, all be still;
Nor let a murmuring thought arise;
His ways are just, his counsels wise.

2. He in the thickest darkness dwells,
Performs his work, the cause conceals;
And, though his footsteps are unknown,
Judgment and truth support his throne.
3. In heaven and earth, in air and seas,
He executes his wise decrees;
And by his saints it stands confess'd,

That what he does is ever best.

4. Then, O my soul, submissive wait,
With reverence bow before his seat;
And, 'midst the terrors of his rod,
Trust in a wise and gracious God.

KING-DOMS

6. NG-DOMS and thrones to God be-long; Crown him, ye nations, in your song:

9:2

His wondrous names and powers re - hearse, His honors shall en-rich your verse.

7. He shakes the heavens with loud STAY, thou insulted Spirit, stay,

alarms;

How terrible is God in arms;
In Israel are his mercies known;
Israel is his peculiar throne.

8. Proclaim him King, pronounce him blest;

He's your defense, your joy, your rest; When terrors rise, and nations faint, God is the strength of every saint.

Sel. 25.

[H. 21.
ATHER of all, whose love profound,
A ransom for our souls hath found,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy pardoning love extend.

2. Almighty Son, incarnate Word,
Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy saving grace extend.

3. Eternal Spirit, by whose breath
The soul is raised from sin and death,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy quickening power extend.
4. Jehovah! Father, Spirit, Son,
Mysterious Godhead, Three in One!
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
Grace, pardon, life, to us extend.

Though I have done thee such despite;
Cast not the sinner quite away,
Nor take thine everlasting flight.

2. Though I have most unfaithful been
Of all who e'er thy grace received,
Ten thousand times thy goodness seen,
Ten thousand times thy goodness grieved;

3. Yet O the chief of sinners spare,
In honor of my great High Priest;
Nor in thy righteous anger swear
I shall not see thy people's rest.

THUS far the Lord has led me on, Thus far his power prolongs my days,

9:3 24

And every even-ing shall make known Some fresh me-mo- rial of his grace.

Sel. 28.

[H. 435.2. Say to the heathen, from thy throne,
"I am Jehovah,-God alone:"
Thy voice their idols shall confound,
And cast their altars to the ground.

HUS far the Lord has led me on,
THUS
Thus far his power prolongs my days;
And every evening shall make known
Some fresh memorial of his grace.

2. Much of my time has run to waste,
And I, perhaps, am near my home;
But He forgives my follies past;
He gives me strength for days to come.

3. I lay my body down to sleep,
Peace is the pillow for my head;
While well-appointed angels keep
Their watchful stations round my bed

4. In vain the sons of earth or hell
Tell me a thousand frightful things;
My God in safety makes me dwell
Beneath the shadow of his wings.

5. Thus, when the night of death shall
come,

My flesh shall rest beneath the ground,
And wait thy voice to rouse the tomb,
With sweet salvation in the sound.

Sel. 29.

[blocks in formation]

Let my religious hours alone;
Fain would my eyes my Saviour see;
I wait a visit, Lord, from thee.

2. O warm my heart with holy fire,
And kindle there a pure desire:
Come, my dear Jesus, from above,
[H. 553. And feed my soul with heavenly love.

ARM of the Lord, awake, awake,

Put on thy strength, the nations
shake,

And let the world, adoring, see
Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.

3. Blest Jesus, what delicious fare,
How sweet thy entertainments are!
Never did angels taste above
Redeeming grace and dying love.

1. My dear Re-deem-er and my Lord, I read my du-ty in thy word; 世

But in thy life the law ap- pears, Drawn out in living cha-rac-1 -ters.

Sel. 31.

[H. 219. 3. Now to the God whose power can do More than our thoughts or wishes know, Be everlasting honors done,

My dear Redeemer and my Lord,

I read my duty in thy word;
But in thy life the law appears,
Drawn out in living characters.

2. Such was thy truth, and such thy zeal,
Such deference to thy Father's will,
Such love, and meekness so divine,
I would transcribe and make them mine.

3. Cold mountains and the midnight air
Witness'd the fervor of thy prayer;
The desert thy temptations knew,
Thy conflict and thy victory too.

4. Be thou my pattern; make me bear
More of thy gracious image here;
Then God, the Judge, shall own my name
Among the followers of the Lamb.

Sel. 32.

CON

[H. 336. YOME, dearest Lord, descend and dwell By faith and love in every breast; Then shall we know, and taste, and feel, The joys that cannot be express'd.

2. Come, fill our hearts with inward strength;

Make our enlargéd souls possess

By all the church, through Christ his Son.

[blocks in formation]

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

And learn the height, and breadth, and Praise him, all creatures here below;

length

Of thine unmeasurable grace.

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

[H. 661. Sel. 35.

3. O for a sight, a pleasing sight
Of our almighty Father's throne!
There sits our Saviour, crown'd with light,
Clothed in a body like our own.

4. Adoring saints around Him stand,
And thrones and powers before Him fall;
The God shines gracious through the man,
And sheds sweet glories on them all.
5. O what amazing joys they feel,
While to their golden harps they sing,
And sit on every heavenly hill,
And spread the triumphs of their King.
6. When shall the day, dear Lord, appear,
That I shall mount to dwell above,
And stand and bow amongst them there,
And view thy face, and sing and love?

[H. 675.

(Stanzas 5, 6 omitted.) FOR a sweet, inspiring ray, To animate our feeble strains, From the bright realms of endless day, The blissful realms where Jesus reigns. 2. There, low before his glorious throne, Adoring saints and angels fall; And with delightful worship own His smile their bliss, their heaven, their all.

3. Immortal glories crown his head, While tuneful hallelujahs rise,

And love, and joy, and triumph spread Through all the assemblies of the skies. 4. He smiles, and seraphs tune their songs To boundless rapture, while they gaze; Ten thousand thousand joyful tongues Resound his everlasting praise.
