How te-dious and taste-less the hours When Jesus long - er I see! Sweet pros-pects, sweet birds, and sweet flow'rs, Have lost all their sweet-ness with me; D. C. But when I am hap - py in Him, December's as plea-sant as May.

The mid-summer sun shines but dim, The fields strive in vain to

2. His name yields the richest perfume, And sweeter than music his voice; His presence disperses my gloom,

And makes all within me rejoice: I should, were He always thus nigh, Have nothing to wish or to fear; No mortal so happy as I,

My summer would last all the year.

3. Content with beholding his face,

My all to his pleasure resign'd, No changes of season or place, Would make any change in my mind. While bless'd with a sense of his love, A palace a toy would appear; And prisons would palaces prove,

If Jesus would dwell with me there.

4. Dear Lord, if indeed I am thine,

If thou art my sun and my song; Say, why do I languish and pine,

And why are my winters so long? O drive these dark clouds from my sky, Thy soul-cheering presence restore; Or take me unto thee on high, Where winter and clouds are no

more.

YE

E angels who stand round the
throne,

And view my Immanuel's face,
In rapturous songs make Him known;
Tune, tune your soft harps to his
praise.

He form'd you the spirits you are,

So happy, so noble, so good;
While others sunk down in despair,

Confirm'd by his power, ye stood.

2. Ye saints who stand nearer than they, And cast your bright crowns at his feet,

His grace and his glory display,

And all his rich mercy repeat: He snatch'd you from hell and the grave,

He ransom'd from death and despair;
For you He was mighty to save,
Almighty to bring you safe there.
3. O when will the period appear,

When I shall unite in your song?
I'm weary of lingering here,

And I to your Saviour belong.
I'm fetter'd and chain'd up in clay;
I struggle and pant to be free;

I long to be soaring away,
My God and my Saviour to see.

1. JE-SUS, full of all compassion, Hear thy hum-ble suppliant's cry;

9: 2 6 8

Let me know thy great sal-vation: See, I lan- guish, faint, and die.

[blocks in formation]

ESUS, full of all compassion, Hear thy humble suppliant's cry: Let me know thy great salvation: See, I languish, faint, and die.

2. Guilty, but with heart relenting, Overwhelm'd with helpless grief, Prostrate at thy feet repenting,

Send, O! send me quick relief.

3. Whither should a wretch be flying, But to Him who comfort gives? Whither, from the dread of dying, But to Him who ever lives?

4. While I view thee, wounded, grieving,
Breathless, on the cursed tree,
Fain I'd feel my heart believing
That thou suffer'dst thus for me.

5. With thy righteousness and Spirit, I am more than angels blest; Heir with thee, all things inherit,

Peace, and joy, and endless rest.

6. Saved!-the deed shall spread new glory

Through the shining realms above; Angels sing the pleasing story,

All enraptured with thy love.

[H. 353.

SWEET the moments, rich in bless

ing,

Which before the cross I spend, Life, and health, and peace possessing, From the sinner's dying Friend. 2. Here I'll sit for ever viewing

Mercy stream in streams of blood; Precious drops, my soul bedewing, Plead and claim my peace with God. 3. Truly blessed is this station,

Low before his cross to lie;
While I see divine compassion
Floating in his languid eye.

4. Here it is I find my heaven,

While upon the cross I gaze;
Love I much? I'm much forgiven;
I'm a miracle of grace.

5. Love and grief my heart dividing,
With my tears his feet I bathe;
Constant still in faith abiding,
Life deriving from his death.

Doxology.

PRAISE the Father, earth and

heaven; Praise the Son, the Spirit praise; As it was, and is, be given

Glory through eternal days.

1. HARK! what mean those holy voi-ces, Sweet-ly sound-ing thro' the skies?

[H. 178. 3. For thy providence, that governs

(Stanza 1 in Music, 6 omitted.) 2. Listen to the wondrous story Which they chant in hymns of joy; Glory in the highest, glory!

Glory be to God most high!

3. Peace on earth, good will from heaven, Reaching far as man is found; Souls redeem'd, and sins forgiven, Loud our golden harps shall sound. 4. Christ is born, the great Anointed,

Heaven and earth his praises sing; O! receive, whom God appointed, For your Prophet, Priest, and King. 5. Hasten, mortals, to adore Him,

Learn his name and taste his joy; Till in heaven ye sing before Him, Glory be to God most high!

[blocks in formation]

Thro' thine empire's wide domain; Wings an angel, guides a sparrow; Blessed be thy gentle reign.

4. But thy rich, thy free redemption, Dark through brightness all along; Thought is poor, and poor expression: Who can sing that awful song? 5. Brightness of the Father's glory, Shall thy praise unutter'd lie? Fly, my tongue, such guilty silence; Sing the Lord, who came to die. Sel. 352. [H. 208.

HAIL, thou once despised Jesus!

Hail, thou Galilean King! Thou didst suffer to release us; Thou didst free salvation bring. 2. Hail, thou agonizing Saviour,

Bearer of our sin and shame! By thy merits we find favor,

Life is given through thy name. 3. Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, All our sins on thee were laid; By almighty love anointed,

Thou hast full atonement made. 4. All thy people are forgiven,

Through the virtue of thy blood; Open'd is the gate of heaven;

Peace is made 'twixt man and God.

in us thy humble dwell-ing, All thy faith-ful mer-cies crown.

Sel. 353.

[H. 345. 2. Which of all our friends, to save us,

(Part of Stanza 1 in Music, Stanza 4 omitted.) Jesus, thou art all compassion,

Pure, unbounded love thou art; Visit us with thy salvation,

Enter every longing heart.

2. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit Into every troubled breast;

Let us all in thee inherit,

Let us find thy promised rest :
Take away the love of sinning,
Alpha and Omega be,
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty,

3. Come, almighty to deliver,

Let us now thy life receive,
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve thee as thine hosts above;

Could or would have shed his blood? But this Saviour died to have us Reconciled in Him to God.

[blocks in formation]

Pray, and praise thee without ceasing, 2. There for sinners thou art pleading, Glory in thy precious love.

[blocks in formation]

There thou dost our place prepare;

Ever for us interceding,

Till in glory we appear.

3. Worship, honor, power, and blessing, Thou art worthy to receive: Loudest praises, without ceasing, Meet it is for us to give.
