more.

Sel. 271.

[Ps. 32, P. 1. | 4. Jesus the Lord will hear
His chosen when they cry,
Yes, though He may a while forbear,
He'll help them from on high.

(Stanza 1 in Music.) 2. They mourn their follies past,

And keep their hearts with care; Their lips and lives without deceit Shall prove their faith sincere.

3. While I conceal'd my guilt,

I felt the festering wound, Till I confess'd my sins to thee, And ready pardon found.

4. Let sinners learn to pray,

Let saints keep near the throne; Our help in times of deep distress, Is found in God alone.

Wake, ev'ry heart, and ev'ry tongue, To praise the

Sa-viour's name.

Sel. 277.

(Stanza 1 in Music.) 2. Sing of his dying love,

[H. 373. 4. This is the glorious day

Sing of his rising power;
Sing how He intercedes above
For those whose sins He bore.

3. Șing on your heavenly way,

Ye ransom'd sinners, sing;
Sing on, rejoicing every day,
In Christ the eternal King.

4. Soon shall we hear Him say,

"Ye blessed children, come!" Soon will He call us hence away, And take his wanderers home.

NOT all the blood of beasts

[H. 89.

On Jewish altars slain,
Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away the stain.

2. But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away:

A sacrifice of nobler name And richer blood than they. 3. My faith would lay her hand On that dear head of thine, While like a penitent I stand, And there confess my sin.

4. My soul looks back to see

The burdens thou didst bear, When hanging on the cursed tree, And hopes her guilt was there.

5. Believing, we rejoice

To see the curse remove; We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, And sing his bleeding love.

And aid my tongue to bless his name, Whose favors are

divine.

Sel. 280.

[Ps. 103, P. 3. | 3. He will present our souls,

(Stanza 1 in Music, 6 omitted.) 2. O bless the Lord, my soul, Nor let his mercies lie Forgotten in unthankfulness, And without praises die.

3. 'Tis He forgives thy sins,

'Tis He relieves thy pain,
'Tis He that heals thy sicknesses,
And makes thee young again.

4. He crowns thy life with love,

When ransom'd from the grave; He that redeem'd my soul from hell Hath sovereign power to save.

5. He fills the poor with good;

He gives the sufferers rest;

The Lord hath judgments for the proud,
And justice for th' oppress'd.

[blocks in formation]

Unblemish'd and complete,
Before the glory of his face,
With joys divinely great.

4. Then all the chosen seed

Shall meet around the throne; Shall bless the conduct of his grace, And make his wonders known.

5. To our Redeemer God,

Wisdom and power belongs,
Immortal crowns of majesty,
And everlasting songs.

[blocks in formation]

PREPARE me, gracious God,

To stand before thy face;

Thy Spirit must the work perform, For it is all of grace. 2. In Christ's obedience clothe,

And wash me in his blood:
So shall I lift my head with joy,
Among the sons of God.

3. Do thou my sins subdue,

Thy sovereign love make known;
The spirit of my mind renew,
And save me in thy Son.

4. Let me attest thy power,

Let me thy goodness prove,
Till my full soul can hold no more
Of everlasting love.

[H. 324.2. The Son of God in tears

WHERE shall rest be found,

Rest for the weary soul?

'Twere vain the ocean depths to sound, Or pierce to either pole: The world can never give

The bliss for which we sigh; 'Tis not the whole of life to live, Nor all of death to die.

2. Beyond this vale of tears

There is a life above,
Unmeasured by the flight of years:
And all that life is love.
There is a death whose pang

Outlasts the fleeting breath;
O what eternal horrors hang

Around "the second death!"

3. Lord God of truth and grace,

Teach us that death to shun,
Lest we be banish'd from thy face,
And evermore undone.
Here would we end our quest:
Alone are found in thee
The life of perfect love, the rest
Of immortality.

[blocks in formation]

Angels with wonder see; Be thou astonish'd, O my soul, He shed those tears for thee. 3. He wept that we might weep; Each sin demands a tear: In heaven alone no sin is found, And there's no weeping there.

Sel. 285.

H how shall fallen man

A Be just before his God?

[H. 49.

If He contend in righteousness,
We fall beneath his rod.

2. If He our ways should mark
With strict inquiring eyes,
Could we for one of thousand faults,
A just excuse devise?

3. All-seeing, powerful God,

Who can with thee contend?
Or who that tries th' unequal strife,
Shall prosper in the end?

4. The mountains, in thy wrath,
Their ancient seats forsake;
The trembling earth deserts her place,
Her rooted pillars shake.

5. Ah! how shall guilty man,

Contend with such a God?

None, none can meet Him and escape,
But through the Saviour's blood.
