60. The death of John the Baptist.
BUT when Herod's birthday was kept, the
daughter of Herodias danced before them, and
pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with 7
an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
And she, being before instructed of her mother, 8
said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a
2 charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless 9
for the oath's sake, and them which sat with
him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. 10
And his head was brought in a charger, and 11
given to the damsel: and she brought it to her
mother. And his disciples came, and took up 12
the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

61. Herod desires to see Christ.

L. 9. 7

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead; and of some, that Elias 8 had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. And Herod said, 9 John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

62. The twelve return.

L. 9. 10
AND the apostles, when they were returned, A. D. 32.
M*.6.30 gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and
told him all things, both what they had done,

66

31 and what they had taught. And he said unto
them, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert
place, and rest a while:" for there were many
coming and going, and they had no leisure so
much as to eat.

loaves and two fishes.

And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his dis4 ciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, * Lev. 23. 5 was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, Deu. 16. 1. and saw a great company come unto him, he M*.6.34 was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd and he began to teach them many things. 35 And when the day was now far spent, he saith J. 6. 5 unto Philip, "Whence shall we buy bread, that 6" these may eat?" And this he said to prove him for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred 2 pennyworth See of bread is not sufficient for them, that every 21, 22. 8 one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith 9 unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what 2 Kings 10 are they among so many? And Jesus said, L. 9. 14" Make them sit down by fifties in a company." J. 6. 10 Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
