thought, vocal expression, or otherwise, can take away from us the constant blessings of GOD, in whose Love, perfection and harmony we live and move and have our being.

There is no evolution without the essential involution. Involution is the progenitor of evolution. Giving of the right sort does not impoverish, but withholding that which should be given tendeth to poverty. Give silently or audibly, which ever seems best. The silent thought of Truth and Love is not so liable to stir up antagonism, as the vocal expression of it is; but truth voiced sometimes uncovers error or mistakes, that they may be destroyed.

Anything which has a beginning has an end, and is an illusion of the mortal and material senses, it is mythical.

Christian literature, methods, and teaching, should be free from any futile self-seeking attempt, or offensive miscarried and abortive effort, to render unto Cæsar the things which are GOD'S GOOD. This is a frequent mistake made by so-called Christian Scientists who give credit to a mortal person for spiritual gifts, truth, or good, and is one of the stumbling blocks which will have to be removed; it is the outcome of selfishness adroitly covered over by the embellishment of attractive yet delusive externals and so-called love thought. It is unchristian and unscientific, however plausible the intention may seem to be. TRUTH belongs to all, eternally, therefore no one should charge for truth, and error is not worth buying. Those who are deceived, mesmerized, or hypnotized by themselves, or others; or by reading books, to think they are Christian Scientists, have to unlearn that mistake and have to find they are but students of Christian Knowledge. Students of real CHRISTIAN SCIENCE each rank and classify themselves, by the measure of their understanding and demonstration of Christian Knowledge which is always Scientific, or by the manifestation of the CHRIST CHARACTER as JESUS did.

If the CHRIST JESUS method of work and healing were restored and made manifest, it would quickly do more for the dear people on this planet, than has been accomplished during the last century. We should expect the first one who again

declares, manifests, and practices the JESUS method and healing work, and greater works than JESUS did, will appear in the form, color and outline of a man as JESUS did; perhaps a carpenter as JESUS was, a fisherman as Peter was, or a persecutor of Christians and a tent-maker as Paul was. His real name will be Goodson, which means the offspring of GooD or GOD, or the idea of SUPREME PRINCIPLE. Seeing that our identification is with God and mankind,-whatever stands for the greatest good of all the dear people; that, we should most desire, wish and pray for; and this desire, wish, prayer, or silent thought, may be like DIVINE LOVE, as still as the daylight or sunshine-but infinitely more powerful for good. The day may not be distant when the masses of the dear people will gain such an understanding of the SCIENCE of CHRISTIANITY, and the UNITY of GOOD; as to enjoy its unspeakable blessings without money and without price-which is their rightful inheritance.

"THOUGHTS are living things, and go whither we direct

them."

To be in love with DIVINE LOVE which is all embracing, is better far, infinitely better, than it is to be loved by mortals. To love is divinely essential, to be loved is its reflection.

A FABLE.

THE HOLY SHADOW.

Translated from the French by Ruth Craft.

Long, long ago, there lived a saint so good that the astonished angels came down from heaven to see how a mortal could be so godly. He simply went about his daily life, diffusing virtue as the star diffuses light, and the flower perfume, without ever being aware of it.

Two words summed up his day: he gave, he forgave. Yet these words never fell from his lips; they were expressed in his ready smile, in his kindness, forbearance, and charity.

The angels said to God: "O Lord, grant him the gift of miracles!" God replied: "I consent; ask what he wishes?"

So they said to the saint: "Should you like the touch of your hands to heal the sick?" "No," answered the saint. "I would rather God should do that."

"Should you like to convert guilty souls, and bring back wandering hearts to the right path?" "No; that is the mission of angels. I pray, I do not convert.

"Should you like to become a model of patience, attracting men by the lustre of your virtues, and thus glorifying God?" "No," replied the saint, "if men should be attracted to me, they would become estranged from God. The Lord has other means of glorifying Himself.”

"What do you desire then?" cried the angels.

"What can I wish for?" asked the saint, smiling. "That God give me His grace; with that should I not have everything?"

But the angels insisted: "You must ask for a miracle, or one will be forced upon you."

"Very well," said the saint, "that I may do a great deal of good without ever knowing it!"

The angels were greatly perplexed. They took counsel together, and resolved upon the following plan: Every time the saint's shadow should fall behind him, or at either side, so that he could not see it, it should have the power to cure disease, soothe pain, and comfort sorrow.

And so it came to pass. When the saint walked along, his shadow thrown on the ground, on either side or behind him, made arid paths green, caused withered plants to bloom, gave clear water to dried up brooks, fresh color to pale little children, and joy to unhappy mothers.

But the saint simply went about his daily life, diffusing virtue as the star diffuses light, and the flower perfume, without ever being aware of it.

And the people, respecting his humility, followed him silently, never speaking to him about his miracles. Little by little, they came even to forget his name, and called him only, "The Holy Shadow."

A PRAYER.

O God our dear Heavenly Father and Mother we come to You, as a little child comes to its parents to tell of its troubles, and to ask for help and deliverance. Claims of discord appear to our mortal sense, which You have never made, and which are unreal and have no existence in Truth and Love. We desire deliverance and freedom from this self-imposed discord, because perfection and eternal harmony are established universally by You, and hence belong to us, according to Your blessed will and word, You do not know of the illusion and discord which seem to our false sense to be so real, and which are self-made; and now as Your own children we come to You our own dear omnipotent and loving Father, and ask You now to help us to rise above and superior to this discord and seeming imperfection, and that this illusion of the mortal senses, may disappear and be forever destroyed; that the one divine consciousness may be always recognized by us, and that oneness with You may be ever present, and freedom from this discord be fully enjoyed. Of ourselves we can do nothing, You, our only helper always are, and with You we have all Good. We now depend alone upon Your infinite Truth and Love, goodness and power, to help and deliver us, in Your strength and wisdom, to rise above all mistakes or error, and find harmony ever present with us. We are in God, in Good, in Perfection, in harmony, in Love, now and eternally. We ask in obedience to You, and with the trust, confidence and assurance that we do now receive the blessed freedom asked for. The deliverance is ours, the glory dear Father is Yours, forever. The victory is gained, through Your power, goodness, and Love.

"Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord." Rom. 6:11.

"You know that a little thought and a little kindness are often worth more than a great deal of money. This charity of thought is not merely to be exercised toward the poor; it is to be exercised toward all men."

CHAPTER 21

GEMS OF POETIC THOUGHT, QUOTATIONS.

"Thoughts do not need the wings of words
To fly to any goal;

Like subtle lightning, not like birds,
They speed from soul to soul.
Hide in your heart a bitter thought,
Still it has power to blight;
Think love, although you speak it not,
It gives the world more light."

"Oh thou whose mighty patience holds
The night and day alike in view,
Thy will our dearest hopes enfolds,
Oh keep us steadfast, patient, true."

"He prayeth best, who loveth best

All things, both great and small; For the dear God who loveth us, He made and loveth all."

"O sacred solitude! divine retreat!

Choice of the prudent! envy of the great!
By thy pure stream, or in the evening shade,
We court fair Wisdom, that celestial maid.”

"You never can tell what a thought can do In bringing you hate or love,

For thoughts are things, and their airy wings Are swifter than carrier doves.

They follow the law of the universe;

Each thing creates its kind,

And they speed o'er the track to bring you back Whatever went out of your mind."
