I BY MRS. H. E. STUDLEY N our Chinese work there can be very little done for women, for very few of the Chinese bring their wives with them. The laboring class are not allowed to do so, and the few merchants who have wives keep them so secluded that it is difficult to find out anything about them. Our work is among the Amoy people, and the women of that region have the smallest feet and are kept in more closely than those of any other part of the Empire. However, among the Christians of the younger generation one finds few bound feet. We have one of these with us, the wife of our Chinese teacher, Mr. Yin. She is a lovely Christian character and well educated. The services are now well attended, with an average of about one hundred for the three Sunday services. Last Sunday several new hearers were with us, who had been treated at the Settlement house dispensary and new hospital, and much benefited physically; and we are praying that they may also be helped spiritually. Nine new members were baptized recently, and we hope they will be confirmed when the bishop comes back, together with a number who have come to us from the Methodists. The Methodists have withdrawn from the Chinese work, and we are now the only ones doing anything for them. We want to make the mission as nearly self-supporting as possible, and the communicants are making good headway toward a church building fund. Just now we are renting the third floor of a building, which is very satisfactory for the time being, but we must look forward to a permanent place eventually. I have been trying our new University Hospital, and I was at home just long enough to pack to come up here to Baguio. I am hoping to stay as long as the rains keep off, for one has to stay some time to get over the effect of the trip. The second day we rode twelve hours in a big stage with four and six mules. Mrs. Hargreaves' work here is most interesting. She has about thirty-seven children, both boys and girls. She is really a mother to them all and, like a mother of such a family, never has a minute to herself. It is not like our other missions in fields where the work has been long established. Mrs. Hargreaves has no helper who has been trained in mission schools, but has to be teacher, matron, seamstress, boss carpenter, and to fill other offices too numerous to mention. She has a Filipino woman who teaches weaving to the older girls, but who is not much better than the children for other things. It is really wonderful how much the children know, considering the short time they have been in school, and in appearance they are a great contrast to the Igorots one meets on the trails-not that they dress differently, but they are so much cleaner. Mrs. Hargreaves has two services in the little house chapel, and it is nice to see how reverently the children conduct themselves and take their part in the service. DISPENSARY WORK AT L CAPE MOUNT AST week a sick girl was brought here by her mother, and they had to sleep in a corner in the school-room, as I did not care to have them in the room with the girls. The girl seemed a little better, but as she did not get well at once her mother was uneasy and took her home. It was an interesting case, as some of the symptoms were those of sleeping sickness. They took medicine with them, and I hope the poor child will recover. ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF OFFERINGS Offerings are asked to sustain missions in twenty-six missionary districts in the United States, Africa, China, Japan, Mexico and Cuba; also work in the Haitien Church and in Brazil; in forty dioceses, including missions to the Indians and to the Colored People; to pay the salaries of twenty-eight bishops, and stipends to 1,530 missionary workers, and to support schools, hospitals and orphanages. With all remittances the name of the Diocese and Parish should be given. Remittances, when practicable, should be by Check or Draft, and should always be made payable to the order of George C. Thomas, Treasurer, and sent to him, Church Missions House, 281 Fourth Avenue, New York. Remittances in Bank Notes are not safe unless sent in Registered Letters. The Treasurer of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society acknowledges the receipts of the following from May 1st, to June 1st, 1908. Lenten and Easter Offering from the Sunday-school Auxiliary. NOTE. The items in the following pages marked "Sp." are Specials which do not aid the Board in meeting its appropriations. In the heading for each Diocese the total marked “Ap.” is the amount which does aid the Board of Missions in meeting its appropriations. Wherever the abbreviation "Wo. Aux." precedes the amount, the offering is through a branch of the Woman's Auxiliary. 47 00 10 35 Wo.
