P. 694. The real value of St. James's rectory is about 1000l. a year.-Lord Braybrooke's eftate of Audley End is relieved of a rent charge of 3000l. per annum by the death of Dr. Parker.-Bp. Wake held this rectory till 1706, when he was fucIceeded by Dr. Trimnell, who held it in commendam for one year after he was a bifhop; and in 1709 was fucceeded by Dr. Clarke. Dr. R. Tyrwhitt was prefented to it in 1729, and refigned in 1733. Dr. Thomas Secker (afterwards archbishop) fucceeded him, and refigned in 1763. Dr. Charles Mofs (the late Bishop of Bath and Wells) fucceeded next, and refigned it foon after for St. George's, Hanover-square. Dr. Samuel Nicholls next held this rectory till his death, Nov. 18, 1763 (vol. XXXIII. p. 565). This vacancy happened foon after the Rev. Mr. Kidgell had published an acrimonious pamphlet against Mr. Wilkes (Ibid. pp. 527, 557); which recommended him to the Earl of Sandwich; who of course, on the vacancy happening, made a point of recommending Kidgell for the living. His character was not particularly exemplary; and Dr. Ofbaldeston (father of the late M. P. for Scarborough), the Bithop of London, whofe chaplain Dr. Parker then was, in order to party off the Atrong recommendation of the first lord of the admiralty, was induced (to avoid a greater evil) to appoint his own chaplain, who otherwife had not much claim on him for fo valuable an appointment. Dr. Parker held it till July 22, 1802. That the Rev. Gerrard Andrewes (who was inducted Aug. 23) may long continue to enjoy a prefernient fo honourably acquired, mult be every good man's with.-Portraits of most of the rectors adorn St. James's veltry.
