SIX DISSERTATIONS UPON DIFFERENT SUBJECTS: BY THE LATE REVEREND JOHN JORTIN, D. D. ARCHDEACON of london, RECTOR OF ST. DUNSTAN'S IN THE LONDON: Printed by RICHARD TAYLOR AND CO., Shoe Lane, FOR WHITE AND CO., FLEET-STREET; ROW; LONGMAN, HURST, REES, AND ORME, PATERNOSTER * 1809. DIVINITY SCHOOL LIBRARY HARVARD UNIVERSITY 621 ORTIN PREFACE. THE titles prefixed to each of the following Dissertations will show the subjects which they discuss; subjects theological, moral, and historical, and, as such, of general use and application. The last Essay is rather of the philological kind, and intended for those who are somewhat conversant with the classic writers and with the learned languages. The author, by not addressing this volume to his Grace of Canterbury, hath done violence to his own inclinations: but though a parent would be troublesome and presuming, who should ask his patron to stand godfather to all his children, yet he may be permitted to lay hold on any fair opportunity of obliquely recommending them to his favour and protection. |
