The Office of the High-Priest.

The Duties peculiarly incumbent upon the High-Priejl were these; to enter the Tabernacle, every Day 3 to dress and 'prepare the Lamps j to make the Oblation of Incense; to prepare, and exchange the Loaves of Shew-Bread, every Week; to offer the Sacrifices, with the rest of the Priests, upon the Sabbaths, and Festivals', and, once a Year, to enter into the Ho/y of Holies, with a Censer of Incense, upon th« great Day of Atonement, to make a general Expiation, for his own Sins, and those of


the whole Nation of the Children of Israel. "We will produce Instances of each of these, separately.

For the ordering of the Lamps, the Instructions are these; 'the Lord spake unto Lcy

Moses, foying, Command the children ofkc.' Israel that they bring unto thee pure oyl olive, beaten, for the light j to cause the lamps to burn continually. Without the vail of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aaron order it, from evening unto the morning, before the Lord continually j 7/ shall be a statute for ever, in your generations. HeJhall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick, before the Lord continually.

Which is to be understood, in a qualified Sense, that the High-Priest was to fee that it was done continually, by those whose Lot it was, to attend upon that Business. For, after, when the Levites are number'd, and their several Stations in the Service of the Tabernacle are allotted them. Of the Families of Kohath it is said, Their charge Jhall be the ark, and the Numb. table, and the candlestick, and the altars, m' 31' and the vessels of the santtuary, 'wherewith


they minister j and the hanging, and all the service thereof. And Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, shall be chief over tbt chief of the Levites, and have the oversight of them, that keep the charge of the sanctuary. They burn unto the Lord every morning and every evening, burnt-sacrifices and sweet incense; theshew-bread also they set in order upon the pure table, and the candlestick of gold, with the lamps thereof to burn every evening.

As to the Oblation of Incense being, in the fame qualified fense, the Business of the High-Priest, besides what we have spoke of it before, we find it thus settled

he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before /^lord. And, in this fense, it was Zachariatis Lot, though only a Priest of the second Order, to burn incense, when he ^uke 9> went into the temple osthe LoKd, '- As to 'the Management of the Shew- ^ Bread; the Precept js this; Every sabbath xxiv. $. he shall set it in order before the Lord continually: and it Jhall be Aaron's and his sons j and they Jhall eat it in the holy place. And, though our Lord, in the Gospel, excuses the Liberty David had taken, upon account of the great Necessity he stood in of Bread, to support both his own Life and the Lives of his Followers; and by 'DaviÆs Example, excuses his own Disciples from that Breach of Sabbath which S the the Pharisees had laid to their Charge, in plucking the Ears of Corn; yet, he adMatt, xii. mits that David did that which was noi 4* lawful for him to do, neither for them that were with him, but only for the Priejir. 1 Chron. §0 jt js Other of their brethren of

the sons of the Kohathites, were over thi stew-bread, to prepare it every sabbath.

As to that Part of the High-Priest\ Office which consisted in his offering the Sacrifices upon the Sabbaths and Festivals, we need not bring any further Proofs of it here, having cited so many, under those Articles. Nor will we repeat what we have had before, concerning his malting the yearly Atonement for the Sins of the People j enough having been said of k already, where we discours'd of the particular Day, and Sacrifice, and the Dismission of the Scape-Goat.

We will only add what St. Paul fays, Heb. ix. by way of Confirmation: The Priests went 6' always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God; But into the second, went the High-Priest alone, once every year; not without blood; which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people.
