We ead also, of the fast of the fourth month, Zc±. ind the fast of the fifth, and the fast of theTM- '9reventh, and the fast of the tenth, which were probably in Commemoration of National Calamities, such as the Destruc:ion of their City and Temple, and their being led into Captivity. Besides which, it is likely, they might have several other Days of Fasting and Rejoycing; which may be seen in those Authors who have written purposely concerning their Affairs. But our Bibles mention no more than these.

And of this last we have mention in several Places of Holy Writ. Where the manner of the Burnt-Offering is prefcrib'd, ; . in the Conclusion, it is said; and he Jhall ■put his hand upon the head of the burntoffering: and it pall be accepted for him, to make atonement for him. Again the Lord
says to Samuel; I have sworn unto the house *. Sam. | of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli'j house JhallUL '4* not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. And the Apostle to the Hebrews, in two places, declares, That every HighPriest is ordained for men, in things pertain- vui. *z. ing to God; that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for fins. We will therefore inquire, distinctly, what the Scripture faith, first, in relation to Sacrifices} and secondly
SACRIFICES. The Sacrifices appointed by God himself, under the Dispensation of the Law, are/*. I. The Burnt-Offering. 2. The Meat-Offering. 3. The Peace-Offering. 4. The Sin-Offering. 5. The TrespassOffering. 6. The Consecration-Offering. The five first offer'd, by the Priest, in behalf of the People j the last, upon his own Account only. And besides, there are likewise some other Offerings, such as those of Purification, and Atonement, and the Oblation of Incense. Of all which we shall speak in their Places. 1 . M SECT. SECT. III.
The Burnt-Offerings was a Sacrifice mtended purely to do Honour to God, and therefore intirely devoted to Him without the Priests partaking of it in the least. For being * quite consumed by Fire; and ascending up toward Heaven with its odoriferous Fumes, it was suppos'd to be grateful and pleasing to the supreme Being.
The manner of ordering it, in its several Kinds, is rather too long to be transcribed Lev. i. from the Bible. I shall only observe, that at the End, it is said to be, An offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the lev. vi. Lord. In another Place, it is thus pre'2* scrib'd; The fire upon the altar Jhall be burning in it, it Jhall not be put out: And the Priejl Jhall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt-offering in order upon it. The fire Jhall ever be burning upon the altar, it Jhall never go out. .
This Fire is what we,afterwards read of, as being miraculously kindled, to consume

Where we are told, that when Aaron brought the Le. burnt-offering, and offer d it according to 16 ■ the manner, 'There came a fire out from before the L|o R Dj and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering, &c. Which Fire, is said, to have been constantly kept in, until the Time of the Babylonish Captivity. However that be, it was reckon'd an impious Presumption to make use of any other in any Burnt-Offering. For when Ksadab and Abihu the Sons of Aaron, burnt Incense in their Censers before the Lord, not with this, but other Fire j we are told, Ley there went out fire from thel^otm and devoured them, and they died before the Lo* P.

The Me At-Offering. • The Meat-Offering,was'a. mixture of fine ^iour,Oyl and Frankincense, made up into :a sort oFCakes^yithout any Leaven in them» and deliver'd to the Priest; who burnt a certain Part thereof upon the Altar to the Lo R D, and took the Remainder for his own Use. The varipus ways of .preparing
