11 It n repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned o back from following me, and p hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to

Carmel, q and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. 13 And Samuel came to Saul:

and Saul said unto him, Blessed r

be thou of the LORD: I haves performed the commandment of the LORD.

14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites fort the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little u in thine own sight. wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

18 And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they 3 be consumed.

19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD'?

20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.

22 And Samuel said, Hath w the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is a better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat Mar. 12,33. of rams.

4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his 2 coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?g

5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify h yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 And it came to pass when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, i and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.

7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not k on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: forl the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the 3 outward appearance, m but the LORD looketh on the heart.n

9 Then Jesse made 4 Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.

7 And the staff c of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron and one bearing a shield went before him.

8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array ? Am not I a Philistine, and ye servants d to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and

10 And the Philistine said, I defy e the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. 12 Now David was the son f of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight g sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the first-born, and next unto him, Abinadab; and the third, Shammah.

14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul. 15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed h his father's sheep at Beth-lehem.

CHAPTER XVIII.

1 Jonathan loveth David. 5 Saul envieth his praise.

AND it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul a of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan b loved him as his own c soul.

2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

4 And Jonathan stripped himself d of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and 1 behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.

6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the 2 Philistine, that e the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with 3 instruments of music.

7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath f slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

8 And Saul was very wroth, g and the saying 4 displeased him; and he Isaid, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? h

9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit i from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied k in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin 7 in Saul's hand.

11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided m out of his presence twice.
