k But the manifestation of the Spirit is given 8 every man to profit withal. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, ch. 13. 2. & 13 are one body: Yso also is Christ. For by one Spirit r are we all baptized into one body, a whether we Jews or 3 Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; 14 bhave been all made to drink into one Spirit. For 15 body is not one member, but many. If the foot say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of 16 body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the 4, 5. Eph. 17 body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole y ver. 27. body were an eye, where were the hearing? Καὶ οὓς μὲν ἔθετο ὁ Θεὸς ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ πρῶτον ἀποστόλους, δεύτερον προφήτας, τρίτον διδασκάλους, ἔπειτα δυνάμεις, εἶτα χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων, ἀντιλήψεις, κυβερνή 29 σεις, γένη γλωσσῶν. μὴ πάντες ἀπόστολοι; μὴ πάντες προφῆται ; μὴ πάντες διδάσκαλοι; μὴ πάντες δυνάμεις ; 30 μὴ πάντες χαρίσματα ἔχουσιν ἰαμάτων ; μὴ πάντες γλώσ31 σαις λαλοῦσι ; μὴ πάντες διερμηνεύουσι; Ζηλοῦτε δὲ τὰ χαρίσματα τὰ κρείττονα· καὶ ἔτι καθ ̓ ὑπερβολὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῖν δείκνυμι.

13 ΕΑΝ ταῖς γλώσσαις τῶν ἀνθρώπων λαλῶ καὶ τῶν ἀγγέλων, ἀγάπην δὲ μὴ ἔχω, γέγονα χαλκὸς ἠχῶν ἢ 2 κύμβαλον ἀλαλάζον. καὶ ἐὰν ἔχω προφητείαν, καὶ εἰδῶ τὰ μυστήρια πάντα καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γνῶσιν, καὶ ἐὰν ἔχω πᾶσαν τὴν πίστιν, ὥστε ὄρη μεθιστάνειν, ἀγάπην δὲ 3 μὴ ἔχω, οὐδέν εἰμι. καὶ ἐὰν ψωμίσω πάντα τὰ ὑπάρ χοντά μου, καὶ ἐὰν παραδῶ τὸ σῶμά μου ἵνα καυθή 4 σωμαι, ἀγάπην δὲ μὴ ἔχω, οὐδὲν ὠφελοῦμαι. Ἡ ἀγάπη μακροθυμεῖ, χρηστεύεται· ἡ ἀγάπη οὐ ζηλοῖ· ἡ ἀγάπη 5 οὐ περπερεύεται, οὐ φυσιοῦται, οὐκ ἀσχημονεῖ, οὐ ζητεῖ στὰ ἑαυτῆς, οὐ παροξύνεται, οὐ λογίζεται τὸ κακὸν, οὐ η χαίρει ἐπὶ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ, συγχαίρει δὲ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ, πάντα στέγει, πάντα πιστεύει, πάντα ἐλπίζει, πάντα ὑπομένει. 8 Ἡ ἀγάπη οὐδέποτε ἐκπίπτει. εἴτε δὲ προφητείαι, κατ αργηθήσονται· εἴτε γλῶσσαι, παύσονται· εἴτε γνῶσις,

honourable, upon these we 1bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant 24 comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked : 25 that there should be no 2schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for an26 other. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all 27 the members rejoice with it. Now eye are the body of e Rom. 12. 5. ΔΙΩΚΕΤΕ τὴν ἀγάπην ζηλοῦτε δὲ τὰ πνευματικά, 2 μᾶλλον δὲ ἵνα προφητεύητε. ὁ γὰρ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ, οὐκ ἀνθρώποις λαλεῖ, ἀλλὰ τῷ Θεῷ· οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἀκούει, 3 πνεύματι δὲ λαλεῖ μυστήρια· ὁ δὲ προφητεύων, ἀνθρώ ποις λαλεῖ οἰκοδομὴν καὶ παράκλησιν καὶ παραμυθίαν. 4ὁ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ, ἑαυτὸν οἰκοδομεῖ· ὁ δὲ προφητεύων, 5 ἐκκλησίαν οἰκοδομεῖ. Θέλω δὲ πάντας ὑμᾶς λαλεῖν γλώσσαις, μᾶλλον δὲ ἵνα προφητεύητε· μείζων γὰρ ὁ προφητεύων ἢ ὁ λαλῶν γλώσσαις, ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ διερμηνεύῃ, 6ἵνα ἡ ἐκκλησία οἰκοδομὴν λάβῃ. Νυνὶ δὲ ἀδελφοὶ, ἐὰν ἔλθω πρὸς ὑμᾶς γλώσσαις λαλῶν, τί ὑμᾶς ὠφελήσω, ἐὰν μὴ ὑμῖν λαλήσω ἢ ἐν ἀποκαλύψει, ἢ ἐν γνώσει, ἢ ἐν η προφητεία, ἢ ἐν διδαχῇ ; Ὅμως τὰ ἄψυχα φωνὴν διδόντα, εἴτε αὐλὸς, εἴτε κιθάρα, ἐὰν διαστολὴν τοῖς φθόγγοις μὴ δῷ, πῶς γνωσθήσεται τὸ αὐλούμενον ἢ τὸ κιθαριζόμενον ; 8 καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἄδηλον φωνὴν σάλπιγξ δῷ, τίς παρασκευάο σεται εἰς πόλεμον ; οὕτω καὶ ὑμεῖς διὰ τῆς γλώσσης ἐὰν μὴ εὔσημον λόγον δῶτε, πῶς γνωσθήσεται τὸ λαλούμενον ; το ἔσεσθε γὰρ εἰς αέρα λαλοῦντες. Τοσαῦτα, εἰ τύχοι, γένη φωνῶν ἐστιν ἐν κόσμῳ, καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῶν ἄφωνον· τι ἐὰν οὖν μὴ εἰδῶ τὴν δύναμιν τῆς φωνῆς, ἔσομαι τῷ λα12 λοῦντι βάρβαρος· καὶ ὁ λαλῶν, ἐν ἐμοὶ βάρβαρος οὕτω

9 it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and wei ch. 8. 2. 10 prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. II When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became 12 a man, I put away childish things. For know we see through a glass, 2 darkly; but then 'face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I 13 am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

14 FOLLOW after charity, and a desire spiritual gifts, a ch. 12. 31. 2 bbut rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speak-b Num. 11. eth in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but e Acts 2. 4. unto God: for no man understandeth him; how3 beit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and ex4 hortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophe5 sieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may 6 receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by drevelation, or by know- d ver. 26. 7 ledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the 4 sounds, how 8 shall it be known what is piped or harped? For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare 9 himself to the battle? So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into 10 the air. There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. Even so 3 Gr. heareth. Acts 22.9.
