the two side posts, and on the upper door posts of the houses wherein they shall eat it. They were to eat the flesh that night, roast with fire, whole a bone was not to be broken; nothing was to remain until the morning; they were to eat with their loins girded, shoes on their feet, in haste, for it was the Lord's passover. For, saith God, "I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and I will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.

The blood shall be to you for a token, upon the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over, the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and thy sons for ever. And it shall come to pass, when ye shall come to the land which the Lord will give, according as he hath promised, that ye

shall keep this service." And when their children asked them, What meaneth this service? they were to say it was the Lord's passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians and delivered houses. And we read, that at night God "smote all the first-born of Egypt, and Pharaoh rose up and went to Moses, for there was not one house in which there was not one dead, and said, Get you gone and serve the Lord." You see what the Lord can do when he comes with his outstretched arm! The Egyptians were urgent upon the people that they might send them out, for they said, we be all dead men. When Pharaoh had let the people go, the Lord led them about through the way of the wilderness, by the Red Sea, and hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he pursued after them, all his horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army. He overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal-zephon.

Mountains on each side, the Red Sea before, and the Egyptians behind. The children of Israel cried out and said to Moses, "Because there were no graves for us in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness: wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians; for it had been better with us that we should serve the Egyptians, than die in the wilderness." Moses cried silently to God, and as Martin Luther observes, it was a powerful silent cry, that entered into the ears of the Lord God of Sabbaoth. The Lord said to Moses, "Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel that they go forward." Moses was ordered to stretch forth his rod over the sea, and divide it. He did so, and the Lord caused the sea to go back, so that the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon dry ground. The waters were a wall upon their right-hand and upon their left. The Egyptians went after them. But as soon as Israel was safe over, Moses by command of God stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea immediately returned into his place, just as the sun bursts out in its strength when the morning appeared. The Egyptians fled against it, and the Lord overthrew them in the midst of the sea, the waters returning and covering the chariots and horsemen and all the host of Pharoah that came into the sea after him, so that there remained not so much as one of them. Thus the Scriptures tell us, That the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore, and Israel saw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians, and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and his servant Moses. Why I state these things to you, is, because it is said, "They that

feared the Lord spake often one to another." It is only they that fear God who can speak experimentally of his wonderful works. There is no other people under heaven that can speak like these.

Again, It is said they sung his praises : "Then sung Moses and the children of Israel, The Lord hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, and he is become my salvation. He is my God, and I will prepare him a habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods; who is like unto thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Thou in thy mercy hast led forth thy people which thou hast redeemed, thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation." We find, also, that as they went forward they wanted bread, and they had it; they wanted water, and they were supplied; they wanted flesh, and they had an abundance. The Lord rained manna upon them to eat, they received of the corn of heaven, and man did eat angels' food: He sent them meat to the full, he rained flesh upon them as dust, and feathered fowls as the sand of the sea." Oh, these are the people that can speak of the wonderful works of God, there are none that can, like these. The Ammonites, the Moabites and the Edomites could not; no, it is only his people who can.

Moses was commanded, when they came into the land of promise, to set apart all the first-born, and when their children asked them of it, they were to say, By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of bondage; and when Pharoah would hardly let us go, the Lord slew all his first-born; and this was to be a token, which they were to teach to their children, and to talk of when they sat down and when they walked by the way, when they lied down and when they rose up, and they were to

bind them for a sign upon their hand, and as frontlets between their eyes, and they were to write them upon the posts of their doors and upon their gates. Was there any other could do this by the command of God, or be able to speak of the deliverances wrought out for them as these? No, there was not another nation under heaven that could. They were to bind them as frontlets between their eyes, which none beside could do by his command: You only have I known of all the families of the earth," saith God. David says, “He hath not dealt so with any nation, and as for his judgments they have not known them." They were typical of the saints of God. Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will tell you what he hath done for my soul."

This is the work the children of God are setting forth; in what way they were delivered from bondage, the wrath of God, the curses of the law and the sword of justice. If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand to shew unto man his uprightness; then he is gracious to him, and saith, "Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom." And as sure as the man gets deliverance, if he meets with any who fear God, he is sure to talk about it, telling them of the deliverance God hath wrought out for them; yes, when any of the children of God come together, they are sure to tell out, one to the other, what the Lord hath done for their souls: "They that feared the Lord spake often one to another.” This was the case with the saints in the first church, in the days of the apostles, who were of one heart, and had all things in common; And they continued daily with one accord in the temple, and in breaking of bread from house to house: they did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart." It was the practice then, and is now also among the saints, when they meet to speak of

the deliverances God hath wrought for them. They were accustomed to these things both in private conversation and public preaching. Paul tells us "to exhort one another daily, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, and so much the more as we see the day approaching." You see by this that such was the practice of the apostles. I have no doubt of what David says, that when any who know the Lord meet together, that they tell what he has wrought out for them : Come, all ye that fear God, and I will tell you what he hath done for my soul." Mary went into the hillcountry, and into the house of Zacharias, to salute Elizabeth, when Eliza beth broke out and said, "Blessed art thou among women; whence is it to me that the mother of my Lord should come blessed is she that believeth there shall be a performance of things which are told her from the Lord." Mary replied, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." Because he had regarded her low estate, therefore all nations were to call her blessed. He that was mighty had done it. He, she said, had done great things, his mercy was upon them that feared him. He had scattered the proud, put down the mighty from their seats, and had exalted men of low decree. He had filled the hungry with good things. Thus when the people of God meet, they do not talk of what they must do, but what the Lord hath done for them. Zacharias had his tongue loosed, and praising the Lord, said, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people, and hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began." If we go a little further, we see after the Saviour was laid in the tomb, two of his disciples going to Emmaus, were talking of the things that had hap

pened, when Jesus drew near and went with them, but their eyes were holden that they should not know him; so they told him of all that had passed, and said that was the third day since these things were done, and that certain women of their companyhere you see was a company united in the fear and love of God-had astonished them, in going early to the sepulchre, by not finding the body, but saying they had seen a vision of angels, who had said he was alive; when certain of them who were with us went to the sepulchre, and it was even as the women had said. The Doctor (Mr. Huntington) observes, If they had seen him their joys would have returned. The Lord Jesus then began at Moses, and all the prophets expounding unto them all the scriptures concerning himself. He stopped with them at the village, and as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them, when their eyes were opened, so that they knew him, and he vanished from their sight; then they remarked one to the other,

Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked by the way." Thus the conversation of the children of God whilst in this world is about the salvation of their souls by Jesus Christ. "One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts." I will speak of the might of thy terrible acts, and, saith David, I will declare thy greatness. "They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness. All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord, and thy saints shall bless thee; they shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power,' to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. They are to speak of the mighty acts and wondrous works of the Most High, then, you know, if they speak of the powerful acts of the Most High, they

must speak of what God hath done for their souls; if they are to speak of the glory and majesty of his kingdom, they must know something about it. The Scriptures represent all men, who are in a natural state dead in trespasses and sins, when they are quickened they fly to God; the Lord delivers them, he raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill, that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people; we must know and experience something to have this done, when it is, we have something to talk about; we can speak of the deliverance he has wrought for our souls, to as many as received him gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name; if sons, then heirs: heirs of what? Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. Jesus Christ is all in all, nothing else will do, they shout victory through him, the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. The Lord says, they shall rule all nations with a rod of iron; these then are things they are to speak of, no others can speak of these things but the elect of God; whatever kind providence it pleaseth God to bring about for your support, it will be your talk when you get into the company of those that fear God; though at times when you get home you may feel ashamed of what you have said, and be determined when you go again to say nothing, only to listen to what others have to speak; as soon as ever they begin to talk, and your heart gets warm, you are sure to speak of what God hath done for you, and thus it will be as long as you live, and the Lord favours you with a door of utterance. If you have these things in your heart, you might as well attempt to hold your tongue, as fire should cease to burn. The Saviour himself tells us, if these should hold their peace the stones would cry out.

that is the next thing in the text. Solomon at the dedication of the temple, prayed to the Lord, and the Lord was pleased to hearken to him, and the fire came down and consumed the sacrifice. I have often thought of those few scattered up and down in the earth, of the Lord hearing them. He saith, "I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion, and I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. Fear not, little flock, saith our Lord, it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." The Lord said to Jeremiah, who then is this people of Jerusalem, slidden back by a perpetual backsliding, they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return, I hearkened, saith God, and heard, but they spake not aught. Therefore both in preaching, in public speaking, and in private, if we put God first and foremost in all things he hears us. “And a book of remembrances was written before him, for them that feared him, and thought upon his name." Lord Jesus says to his people, “I call you not servants but friends." If your hearts have received his instructions, you will speak of his love as your love; his eye and his heart are perpetually on the objects of his choice, but the free-willer who speaks against the righteousness of Christ, setting the atonement at nought, the Lord will never hearken to him. Why, say you, when the Lord is pleased to fix my thoughts upon himself they bring comfort to my soul, as David says, "In the multitude of my thoughts within me, thy comforts delight my soul." There is no hearkening till God draws our hearts and affections towards him; then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another, the Lord hearkened, and a book of remembrance was written. What is this book of remembrance that is to be written? There is the book of conscience, and the book of

the law, in which were written all the blessings and cursings; the book of life, where all the elect of God are written. But the book mentioned in my text, was a book of remembrance. Saith David," Thou tellest my wanderings; put thou my tears into thy bottle are they not in thy book," We read of the book of the genera tion of Adam; also of the book of the Chronicles, in which things are registered or recorded, In the book of Esther we have an account of two of the king's chamberlains seeking to lay hands on the king; and it being known to Mordecai, he told it to Esther the queen, who certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name. When inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out, and both the chamberlains were hanged. This was written in the book of the chronicles before the king. When Haman sought the destruction of the Jews, the Lord so ordered it that the king one night should have no sleep; he orders this book to be hrought, and being read before him, this event being recorded, the king asked what had been done to Mordecai? They told him nothing: though the king had registered this, he had forgotten Mordecai; but the living and the eternal God was determined he should not be neglected. And what was the reward? Mordecai promoted to honour, his people saved, and their enemy, who meant their destruction, destroyed. The Lord remembered Noah; made the waters be assuaged, so that he came forth from the ark. Poor Samson, when the Philistines took him, put out his eyes, made him grind in the prison house; when they took him before the lords of the Philistines to make sport, Samson told the lad that held him to feel the pillars upon which the house stood, that he might lean. The house was very full, three thousand upon the roof, all the lords of the Philistines

there.

It must have been a spacious house. Samson calls upon the Lord November, 1844.]

to remember him: O Lord God, remember me I pray thee, and strengthen me I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may at once be avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes." The Lord remembered hita, for when he bowed himself with all his strength; and said, Let me die with the Philistines; the house fell: so the dead he slew at his death, were more than they which he slew in his life. An eminent type of Christ he was. The Lord Jesus at his death got the victory; slew death, the devil, and sin.

And they shall be mine, saith the Lord, in that day.” But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my law in their inward parts, and write them in their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." Redeemed by the atoning blood, they are called God's people. The Saviour saith to God the Father, I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world; thine they were, and thou gavest them me, and they have kept thy word. He redeemed them with his precious blood, called them by his grace. therefore they eat his flesh and drink his blood, therefore they are his, and the Lord says, And they shall be mine in that day when I make up my jewels," This day has a reference to the last day, or final conclusion of the whole, when those who fear God shall rise first. It is said,

The upright shall have dominion in the morning." They shall all come together a perfect man in Christ Jesus. Then the top stone will be brought forth with shouting, crying, Grace, grace unto it. Though you may have many doubts and fears, if you do but answer the description I have given you, then there will be no doubt of your being one of his jewels in that day. I have either heard the Doctor say, or read it somewhere in his writings, that divinity, and the experience
