By this scriptural elucidation you see, Sincere Inquirer,' and thousands of people shall see, also, the signs and deeds of the present times, through the God appointed means of faithful witnesses and editors of magazines, whilst by a still small voice in us he says, "Publish ye," Jer. xxxi. 7. God be praised for the special favour of a national free press, that we may warn, in God's way, and be beneficial to the wicked and the righteous, according to your selected scripture.

It may be asked by the Sincere Inquirer,' and his companions, Is it possible for a God begotten, possessed, grace and truth filled, regenerated, God exalted, protestant sovereign, and house or household, to be so far seduced by Satan, and the aforesaid idolaters, and be diverted from Bible protestantism, and yet remain professed protestants, although in a certain degree joined in affinity with all the aforesaid idolators, anti-protestants, blasphemers, and immoralists, who would if it were possible silence, nay slay the protestant God-sent public witnesses? My answer is, Yes; and for an undeniable proof see ye that the blessed, regenerated king Jehoshaphet, by Satan's temptations, seductions, and the remains of indwelling sin and sinful infirmities, joined affinity with the idolatrous, immoral, and blasphemous Adab, the king of Israel, and his powers; and although Jehoshaphat's conscience, which God had made tender by grace and truth, smote him, he united as much as possible his household and all his national powers with Ahab and his powers. See 1 Kings xxii. 2-5. And though the prophet of God was sent to warn both the kings, the unregenerate as well as the regenerate, and also their households and powers, as joined in a wicked affinity for a time. The blessed Jehoshaphat could not immediately depart from the snare, so he and his powers united with wicked Ahab and his powers, proceeding to war in defiance of God's warning by August, 1844.]

his prophet and national, authorized, protestant bishop; which bishop, for his warnings, was cast into prison by the command of wicked Ahab, while Jehoshaphat, notwithstanding all his trembling and sorrow, did not check Ahab, or endeavour to prevent the bishop being imprisoned. But these wicked ways cost Ahab his life, as a bowman's arrow was directed by the Lord to be the instrument of his death, that the blood ran from his wound into his chariot, and he died at even. But king Jehoshaphat, under God's judgments with his household and suit or powers in the field of battle, turning to the Lord from their evil ways, and crying out for favour, they escaped temporal death.

Moreover, take notice, O' Sincere Inquirer,' that the most regenerated, tender-hearted, God fearing protestant king, Josiah of old, for going against the warnings, threatenings, and admonitions of one of God's public witnesses and warriors, by Satan's temptations and remaining sinful infirmities, was visited with sore judgments, and smitten with arrows unto the temporal death of his body, but his soul was taken up into glory, regenerated and perfect, at the death of his body. See 2 Chron. xxxv. 22, 23. And his body was buried, and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah their king, and Jeremiah the prophet lamented his death.

Well, then, it is by the will and working of God that the public prophets, bishops, clergy, and other Godsent public witnesses, by all means, especially through magazines, has and shall warn the regenerate and unregenerate by God's Bible, and say unto them, "" As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" or senates and governments professing protestantism. Exod. xx.

But for the further elucidation of

this passage in Ezekiel, there is in it, above all aforesaid, a life and truth, infusing, warming and calling to God the Father's elect sons and daughters in God the Son, by which from his communicable fulness, in his power and blessing by the Holy Ghost, with or without the use of men, although generally by men's ministry, in his power and blessing, saving health is sent into the elect among all nations. See Psalm Ixvii. 2. And the election are now and shall be made willing in the day of his power, in the beauties of holiness. Ps. cx. 3. Even whilst passing under the rod for sin, as made to see and feel the exceeding sinful ness of sin, by being chastened out of God's law, and by the gifts of godly sorrow, repentance unto life and toward God the Father, in faith, hope and love. All pray, confessing sins, supplicating for pardon and remission, and all receive the same in God's set time. Such was Moses' case and state in Pharaoh's household, as was Abraham's in the household at Ur of the Chaldeans, unto all the elect families of God, to Peter, James, John, and Saul of Tarsus.

Thus we find, in and through God's warnings, threatenings, calls and exhortations, out of his law and testimony, is the salvation of the election, in and through Christ Jesus, as is the case with our " Sincere Inquirer," who writes himself A babe in grace." Yes," the gift of God is eternal, through Jesus Christ our Lord," Rom. vi. 23. In the afore stated blessings we have both Jews and Gentiles, access by one Spirit unto the Father," Eph. ii. 18. And so whilst indwelling sin is strengthened by Satan and unbelief, fears and doubts, the worse of all; we are led by the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of grace, supplications, adoption, holiness, filial fear, faith, hope and love, daily, nay momentarily some days, praying unto the Father, in and through Christ, supplicating for all

promised blessings, spiritual and tem poral.

And "being justified by faith, we have peace with God, even the Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ. And have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God," Rom. v. 1, 2. The " Inquirer in those blessings, living a new life, and having been baptized with water, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, one God, as commanded Matt. xxviii. 19, 20, is then invited to the Lord's Supper, bread and wine, the symbols of his blessed body and blood, our life-giving food. Yes, I say, receive the ordinance and more grace thereby, even as the Lord says, I am come that my sheep might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly," John x. 10. All the Lord's ambassadors, ministers, witnesses, and editors of magazines, especially in these days of temptation and trial to protestants, as foretold in Rev. iii. 10, declare that the God-given and commanded Bible ordinances, of water baptism and the Lord's supper, should be duly ministered by pastors, and received by believers and their house or household, as their cases may be, a means to glorify God, and publicly to acknowledge him in the face of all idolaters; and so in God's blessing winning the elect from their idolatry, and turning them from their wicked ways. And by ministering and receiving the Lord's instituted supper,

we

"shew forth his death till he come," 1 Cor. xi. 26; exhorting and inviting all believers to the ordinance.

Now whilst we are enjoying all the aforesaid blessings, we are warned of God, by the substance of your given text in Ezek. xxxiii. 11, to a life of filial obedience to God's revealed will. "Not to sleep, as do others, watch and be sober," 1 Thess. And to "resist Satan stedfast

but to v. 6.

"Com

in the faith," 1 Peter v. 9. ing boldly, (as God's elect, redeemed, regenerate people,) to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in every time of need," Heb. iv. 16. For a stock of grace for us to improve, as some talk about, is not enough for us. But opposed to that heresy and vanity, we are called to pray alway to be so truly blessed and preserved, that we may not die temporal deaths by surprize, or by wounds of God in fatherly displeasure, although our souls are saved in and through Christ, as Eli and Josiah died temporal deaths.

Therefore as God's obedient public witnesses, ministers and pastors, let us faithfully and affectionately, in God given loyalty, self-denial and holy zeal, warn and admonish the British senate, now under temptation, Rev. iii. 10, as a protestant professiug house, saying in the words under consideration, "Turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel ?"

Finally, Sincere Inquirer,' I beg of you to notice that the substance of the passage in Ezekiel was spoken by Isaiah to the protestant king Hezekiah, and his house of old, by way of warning and judgments unto his temporal death. Isaiah xxxviii. 1. At which moment of warning, the grace and life of truth entering the king's soul, in the power and blessing of God the Holy Ghost, the king turned. I pray you read of the blessed turn in the Xxxviiith of Isaiah, and consider the king's lengthened life; he was to live peace and truth fifteen years longer, before his temporal death in the full assurance of endless glory with God. Glory to God in the highest!

May the God of Israel render the solicited scriptural elucidation,' a blessing to the Sincere Inquirer, and to hundreds of people, both high and low, rich and poor, and he shall have the praise. Amen.

LETTER FROM REV. W. BIDDER TO A FRIEND.

My Dear Friend,

I TAKE my pen to inform you I intend to fulfil my promise respecting coming down to preach once more to your people the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to give you information as to the day. I have so far, therefore, determined in my mind, if the Lord permit, to be with you on Wednesday next, so you may give it out to-morrow to the people, that if spared, your old friend will talk to them a little about Jesus Christ on Wednesday and Thursday evenings

next.

May the Holy Ghost the Comforter be with us, then sure I am, we shall be refreshed together and shall mount on our high places, and to the praise of the glory of his grace, bless his precious name. I cannot now write a long letter as the time is short, yet I suppose you will murmur unless there is a word or two; well turn ove,r Jehovah in his Trinity of persons from vast eternity past, chose and ordained a remnant of Adam's race, to grace and glory, according to the counsel of his own will it was his pleasure so to do: consequently the Father gave them an election secret existence, in the second Person, the eternal Logos, this everlasting Son, his express, engraven, natural essential, eternal image, who being predestinated into creature-being, was set up their covenant head, and they set up in him his covenant-members, to whom they were united eternally in whom they have oneness, and unalienable interest and indissolable relationship. He their husband, and they in one chosen collected body mystical his spouse, for the praise of the glory of his grace and their greater glory. He decreed to permit their fall in their natural head, that the grand, the mysterious plan adjusted by infinite wisdom in his Own eternal mind before the founda

tion of the world, which plan as is becomes unfolded to angels, astonishes them altogether, and fills us with astonishment and wonder; to execute which all the Persons in the Godhead engaged together and with each other, to save from the ruins of the fall, the chosen remnant, by the Father's giving and sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, laying on him all our iniquities, and finishing them there, and him our surety for the same accepting of his obedience on our behalf, imputing the whole of it to us as our righteousness, his blood being the ransom price, and by the which our hellish sins are all removed. Oh, the wonderous grace, the co-essential Spirit, together with the Father and the Son, engaged to quicken us when dead in sins; to shew us our state as sinners, to reveal to us the spirituality of the Sinai covenant. This produces a shaking among the dry bones, and oh, how I trembled, rottenness entered my bones; God be merciful to me, a sinner, was all my cry, or rather the meaning of my groans, mixed with many, many fears; but when he opened to me the heaven of his love, the ocean of his pardoning grace, the sea of his covenant mercy, I stood amazed, and wept aloud, tears of unutterable joy, the remembrance of which at this moment, though more than twenty three years, have elapsed since, is sweet to me; I believe I shall have to bless my God in the heaven of heavens to all eternity for the year

1814.

Well, my brother, many have been my ups and downs since, deep waters of tribulation has my Lord enabled me to wade through; and I hope by his good pleasure safely to arrive at home, home, sweet home. But more of this when I see you.

Meanwhile go on to speak of Him to the people, and may the Lord the Spirit bless his truth from your lips;

[blocks in formation]

CHRIST is our Surety: he put away sin from befor God as if it had never been.

Christ has the same love in his heart now as he had when he was nailed to the cross.

The greatest service you can do Christ this side the grave is to trust more in his love, and go daily to him, that you may commit every concern of yours into his loving hands and tender care, and trust him still more and more, until he brings you to his everlasting kingdom.

The vilest of you are welcome to Christ if the Lord the Spirit make you willing.

If all the Bible could be contracted into a sentence it would be this, God the Father says, Take my Son, and with him every blessing which can make you both holy and happy.

The law, the sentence of the law, and the obligations to all its demands Christ nailed to his cross; and we are now sharers with him in his victories. The triumph of his victories will be the burden of our song throughout all eternity.

Christ the Shepherd of his people brings them into his fold, and keeps them in his fold, and he will be in his office until all the elect are gathered in.

It is the work of faith to mix with the word. The word preached did not profit, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. No profit but by believing.

If God brings you to believe upon his Son, and puts honour upon his

testimony, you will have him to thank and adore to all eternity.

I am not tired of preaching Christ if you are not tired of hearing him. Little thoughts of Christ manifest low thoughts of sin.

Like as the sins of the Israelites were laid upon the scape goat, and he carried them into a land of forgetfulness; so saith the Lord, the sins of his people when sought for shall never be found. The Father will remember them no more for ever. Christ bare the sins of many. was the sin-bearing sacrifice. was made sin. Sin and sin offering are the same words in Hebrew.

He

He

All the revelation of God is to open this grand truth, how a sinner is to be saved and that it is by Jesus Christ, who came to live for us, to die for us, and to rise for us. He is the propitiation and atonement. God's perfections harmonize in him.

It is agreeable to reason and interest that a sinner believe what God hath said. I have his word for it, I shall never perish. I have his promise that I shall have everlasting life. It is no presumption when the believer flees to the blood of Christ; a proof, a sad proof of the fall, and that the hardness of our hearts will not let us take salvation, and the things which accompany it, and make use of them. If Moses had been asked to give a description of the furniture of the tabernacle, he would have said, this altar signifies the lamb of God who is to take away sin; this table shews he is to be bread that giveth life to his people; this candlestick shews he is the true light that lighteneth every one born into the spiritual world; this incense shews the sweet perfume of his intercession; this vail, covered over with cherubim and palm trees, shews the Lion-Man will be a conqueror over all the enemies of his church and people.

You will not conquer one sin until you have received the pardon of your

sins, and are led to set Christ's great strength against your weakness.

We want the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, we want him continually, as much as we want breath for our bodies. And he abides with a believer. He is a faithful witness that the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, cleanseth from all sin.. If any man, if any of us sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. There is the death of sin. And when the Spirit enables us to fly to the blood of Christ for pardon, he enables us to fly to him for victory. Mind, he is a righteous Advocate; a believer never asks any thing of him that is denied. He is the only Advocate.

It ought to sink deep into all your hearts, what am I as a dying sinner to expect pardon for, and what in this state of warfare am I to expect victory from? Remember it is only through the satisfaction made to law and justice by Christ Jesus, you can have remission of sins.

Christ Jesus gives the blessing. He is upon his throne to give you whatever you need.

All our prayers are through Christ

Jesus.

Our Church teaches you so far, all the collects are in and through Christ Jesus our Lord.

The high priest's turban, or mitre, as they call it, there was inscribed thereon, the holy one of Jehovah; that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things. My best duties, my enlargements, my goings out too in prayer, there is iniquity in them. All the acceptance of all, sirs, must be in and through the Beloved.

"And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and grave on them the names of the children, six names on each stone, one stone for each shoulder," and it was to shew the government rested upon him. Besides this, he had the breastplate. All the fulness of light comes from Christ Jesus.
