version of the companion of your bosom, in going up to the house of God in company, and mutually anticipating the happy, the thrice blessed period, when the ransomed of the Lord, gathered out of every kindred, people, and tongue, shall return to Zion with songs, and everlasting joy upon their heads, and when sorrow and sighing shall flee away for ever.

No absent sons, nor vacant thrones,

Shall e'er be seen when Christ appears,
He'll have the purchase of his groans,
Yet from the wheat remove the tares.

Then shall my soul in that great day,
Arise to life and joys divine,
And shine, when worlds are fled away,
In that bright coronet of thine.

PULPIT SAYINGS OF THE LATE REV. WILLIAM ROMAINE: TAKEN DOWN BY THE LATE REV. SAMUEL EYLES PIERCE.

To be Continued.

CHRIST became one with us, that we might become one with God.

It is the believer's duty to rejoice in the Lord always, as much as it is to keep the ten commandments.

That is a christian, who can get something for prayer and praise out of every thing.

The believer is made sensible that he is a wretched, ruined sinner, and so he lives on Christ every moment.

People are continually complaining to one of something in themselves; why every thing you find in yourself should send you to Christ.

When you are not discouraged, but encouraged to come to Christ, that is the end of corruptions.

My life and all I have from Adam, is subject to death. I want a life that death cannot touch. There it is in Christ.

Christ is the Lord of life in the hour of death.

After the saints have enjoyed the mansions of bliss for millions of years,

it will be but one drop out of the immense ocean of the love of God. Faith in Christ's righteousness is a cordial indeed in a dying hour.

What have I to look at that my life may be holy, my heart happy, and my conscience at peace? At the fulness of him in whom all fulness

dwells.

All we want, to get pardon for our sins, and peace for our consciences, is in the obedience unto death of Jesus Christ.

The word is not preached to be heard, but preached to be believed.

What I have, I will bless God for; and what I have not, I thank God I do not want. God would rather make the stones bread, than such an one should perish.

A believer should be always going upwards either in prayer or praise.

Take Jesus, and all the blessings of life and salvation are your's for

ever.

The principal thing believers have to do, is to enjoy Christ.

You and I are not merely to look at Christ and admire him, but to take him and enjoy him.

Trust Christ much, and you will have much to praise him for ever.

Christ has done the work of salvation freely, fully and eternally.

There is no one will ever overcome a sin but by this method, to see that the Lamb of God has taken away the guilt of sin, and then to look at his almighty arm to subdue and crucify it for him.

Jesus Christ is the head of a new

race of mankind. He gives his Spirit to quicken the dead in sin, and unites them to himself.

Christ delivers from sin, death and hell entirely, and entitles to righteousness, life and glory.

Take Christ and make him your paradise on earth.

Sin brought in every misery both in earth and hell.

You should look at Christ as though there were no sin in you.

The best of us find, that when our hearts are at highest pitch, when at the top of the mount, they are even then but as warm water. soon cool again; and therefore we should go to Jesus, not only to warm our hearts, but to keep thein warm.

There is in Christ that which will make you more happy than your heart can wish.

The believer lives on Christ for his substance, for his happiness, for his all; so that Christ is to him what every thing else is to others.

A christian is the last man in the world to be idle; nay; the more he grows in the christian life, the more he has to do.

The more spiritual a man grows, the more he will make Christ his one hope.

You may think I know a great deal of Christ, I hope I do a little; but really I see myself but a little child: I am but learning my A. B. C., and there is so much in the gospel, that I have but just begun my lesson. The very hidings of God's counte. nance are for his people's good.

The Lord God gave his book, the Bible, and left it in the hand of the Spirit, that it might be the great instrument of salvation.

We want the same Paul did, and blessed be God there is the same abundant fulness now as then, to supply our wants.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TRIED MINIS

TER OF CHRIST.

[IN reference to the letter which we published in our last month's Magazine, and our note appended thereto, we have received the following contributions, and for which we feel much obliged. We rejoice that our brief appeal has been thus responded to, and do not doubt that the Tried Minister will feel grateful to our Correspondents, while he acknowledges it before his heavenly Father, who hath thus influenced the

BEING a subscriber for your little work, almost ever since its first publication, and continuing the same, I was much struck with an extract of a letter in the number for this month, June, giving an account of a minister of Christ being in great distress in temporal things, also in ill health. I was constrained to exert myself for his relief. Age prevented my going out myself, but in that I found assistance, and in answer to prayer the Lord enabled some of his people to work with me, and I must say my success has exceeded my expectation. Praise the Lord for it. I now enclose you an order for £2 8s 6d, and shall trouble you for a line by return of post, acknowledging the receipt of the same, and, as yourself proposed, you will name it on the cover of the next number. Wishing you and your correspondents soul prosperity, I beg to subscribe myself, your's, &c.

Night upon us fast is drawing,

Now we 'll join to praise the Lord; And while day is still withdrawing, Jesus' love we will record: Hallelujah,

Be his glorious name adored.

Though our day of life is flying,
And the night of death draws on;
On his love we are relying,
Ere the eve of life is gone :
Hallelujah,

We would rest on Christ alone.

At thy throne, Lord, deign to meet us,

Help us there to pray aright;

In thy mercy still protect us,
Leave us not in sorrow's night:
Hallelujah,

All thy ways are just and right.

As the shades of death draw near us, May we in thyself find peace; When in death thou shalt release us, Make our joys in thee increase : Hallelujah,

Morn shall bring us home to bliss.

These are joys which saints believing,
Know can never fade away;
Though on earth but part receiving,
Night shall bring to perfect day :
Hallelujah,

We will onward speed our way.
Soon we hope to dwell in glory,
There to see thee as thou art;

There, dear Jesus, to adore thee,
Never more from thee to part:
Hallelujah,

There thy love shall fill each heart.

CHEERFUL VIEWS

OF A FUTURE

STATE.

BY SUSANNA HARRISON,

Author of Songs in the Night. Not published in her works.

AT thy command I meekly yield
My body to the dust;

Jesus, I trust alone in thee,

And know in whom I trust.

Fix thou the time-the time is fixed In the divine decree;

Call when the time is fully come,

And I will answer thee.

My flesh and soul to thee I give,
In their united state;
And is it more to trust the Lord
With each when separate?

I claim thy promise here below,

To come and dwell with thee;
And why not trust thy word, that says,
"Where I am, thou shalt be."

The glorious angels stood prepared,
Soon as the beggar died,
His parting spirit to convey

To faithful Abraham's side.

In all my days those morning stars
Have been my daily guard ;

And will they not, when loosed from clay,
Direct me to my Lord?

Soon as pale death hath closed my eyes,
Those radiant sons of light

Are present to my mental view:-
Oh, what a joyful sight.

They'll bear me up in friendly hands,
To regions yet unknown;
And wafted o'er etherial seas,

Safe land me near my throne.

How glorious is the gift of faith
That cheers the darksome tomb ;
And through the damp and noisome grave,
Can shed a rich perfume.

Precious the faith that lifts the soul

Above desponding fear;
Joyful in hope of heaven, her home,
And longing to be there.

I WOULD SEE JESUS!

FATHER, at the place of prayer

Bends again thy suppliant son,

Lord, thou know'st what brings him there,
Perfect that thou hast begun :

Thou hast bowed his stubborn will,
Humbled former thoughts of pride;
And he comes to Zion's hill,
Trusting in the Crucified.

Thou who didst the bondage break,
Thou who dost the desert cheer;
Friend that never did forsake,

Refuge strong and always near;
Drawn by gratitude to thee,

Drawn by strongest cords of love, Listen to my urgent plea,

And my urgent prayer approve.

Trials now restrain their rage,

Calmer flow the billows now,
And the storms that once did wage
Cease to agitate my brow:
'T was thy power sustained therein,
At thy word they sank to rest;
Messengers from earth to wean,
Messengers in love to arrest.

Lord, their errand now fulfilled,
Centred all my hopes in thee,
Chastened, humbled, reconciled;
Manifest thyself to me.
Like the publican I bow,

Pleading mercy, feeling base;
Sovereign grace thou then didst shew,
Lord again shew sovereign grace!

Patient, long at wisdom's door,

At the house where Jesus dwells,
Where thy saints their Lord adore,
Where the priest thy message tells,
Burning with an ardent flame

I have prayed a word from thee :-
For the glory of thy name,
Oh, my Lord, remember me.

In thy temple, not alone,

I have sought thee every where;
Sought thee at the mercy throne,
Sought thee on the knee of prayer ;
Yet in vain, though still supplied,
Still protected, guided, blest;

Tell me, should I thus abide.

Must I thus contented rest?

Lord, the promised vision grant,

Fain I would assurance crave; To behold thee, Lord, I want,

Thou who died'st my soul to save : To behold, and hear thee say,

"I thy great salvation am; Sinner, cast thy fears away,

Thou art sheltered in the Lamb."

Now, my Lord, thou know'st my prayer, And shouldst thou my prayer approve, Let me now thy presence share,

Fill me with the sense of love: Promised Comforter descend, Testify as thou knowest how; Let me realize my Friend,

See by faith my Saviour now.

CONSOLATION IN DEEP WATERS,

"Cast down but not destroyed.”—2 Cor.

iv. 8.

CAST down I am, but not destroyed,

All praise to bonndless grace;

I think I see Jehovah's love

Shine in the Saviour's face.

Cast down I am, but still remain,
Bless God, on praying ground;
And oh, that with his praying saints
I ever may be found.

Cast down I am, but yet remain
To tell of Jesus' love;

Oh, may I feel its power below.
And sound its fame above.

Cast down I am, but not cast out
Of my Redeemer's sight;
He watches o'er me day by day,
And all he does is right.

Convinced of this, though still cast down,
In him I must rejoice;

Assured, although he seem to frown,
I yet shall hear his voice.

Shall hear him sweetly whisper peace
To my sin-burdened soul;

So shall he give my spirit ease,
And all my fears controul.

Well while on earth, and well in death,
If he support shall give;

For him on earth I 'll spend my breath,
And with him ever live.

CHASTISEMENT THE FRUIT OF SIN.

The Substance of Two Sermons preached at Potton New Meeting, November 9th and 13th, 1842.

BY WILLIAM TITE.

"Then when lust hath conceived it bring

eth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."-James i. 15.

(Concluded from page 153.)

URIAH being thus removed, he takes Bathsheba to be his wife. 2 Sam. xii. 9. This finishing of sin brought death into his conscience; yet God sent Nathan to reprove him, judging him out of his own mouth, bringing to him "Thou art the man!" Nevertheless he gave him repenting grace, and brought David to an acknowledgment and grief for his sin, at the same time blessing him with the glad news of forgiveness; for on his confession, I have sinned," Nathan said to him, "The Lord hath put away thy sin, thou shalt not die." Who but our God could forgive such sins as these? but blessed be his gracious name, the everlasting arms of his mercy were underneath poor David, proving that August, 1844.]

because his compassions fail not we are not consumed.

This declaration of the prophet was a prop to bear up his poor soul under all the troubles and confusion he had to pass through; yet his sin brought death into the family, as it is written, "The Lord slew the child that Bathsheba bare to him." It brought the sword into his house, and be must feel the effects of it; his heart shall be pierced with the tidings. of Amnon committing fornication with Absalom's sister, Tamar, and then of Absalom killing Amnon. Absalom also gains the hearts of the people, and drives David from his throne. Shimei curses him, calling him a bloody man. Satan accusing, and conscience witnessing against him, for the blood of Uriah that he had shed causeless. His soul thus overwhelmed, beneath his misery, guilt, sin and shame, he is filled with confusion, and is as a dumb man, in whose mouth are no reproofs. After this Absalom went in unto his father's concubines, in the sight of all Israel, so fulfilling the prophet's prediction. 2 Sam. xii. 11. Thus God dealt with David in a way of retributive justice, paying him back in his own coin, and meted out to him the same measure
