PREFACE.

AGAIN our little bark, after having breasted the billows for more than twenty years, gathers up its accumulated numbers to commence another voyage. Launch forth, thou little vessel, and may the gales of the Holy Ghost so fill thy sails, that notwithstanding boisterous billows may threaten to sink thee, and foes numberless may oppose thee, thou mayest safely convoy thy passengers to the happy haven, the land of promise. Ride up and down the world's waters, and whenever thou meetest with one in distress, shipwrecked, or wounded, bear up to him, and exhibit to him thy freight, which thou mayest assure him was specially provided for such as he. Let him know that however unskilfully it has been laid in, it is a precious treasure, and of great value, yea, that it may prove the earnest of an inheritance incorruptible, and of a crown that fadeth not away. Prayer, thou mayest tell him, was the long boat which attended thee all the while to fetch in thy lading; the love of God thy lanthorn; sincerity thy ballast; desire to honour God thy main mast; heaven is the country to which thou art sailing, and thy name is God-speed. It is acknowledged that thou hast many defects: some faults may no doubt be found in those who provided thy cargo, and the master workman may be the most faulty of all; but the hand of free grace can stop all thy leaks, and the divine bounty can supply whatever thou lackest. It is expected that thou wilt meet with many storms, as a vessel bound for the straits. The high wind of custom will rise against thee, the full tide of nature will be sure to cross thee, and both strive their utmost to overturn thee. In every sea thou art in danger of ruin. On the leeshore the quicksands of the world's allurements, on the weathershore the rocks of its threatenings will endeavour to overwhelm thee. Besides, that great buccaneer of the dead, the Prince of Darkness, whose name is Apollyon, and whose wisdom is from beneath, sensual and devilish, and whose officers are all sworn agents for hell, will have thee in chase, and will try either with fiery darts of temptation to blow thee up, or with his great guns of atheistical scoffs and taunts to sink thee down; but be of good courage, He who owneth thee, for whose use and at whose cost thou wast built, hath all thine enemies at his beck and bidding. The Lord is a man of war, the Lord is his name. He can sink thy pursuers, those arch-pirates, as lead in the mighty waters, and make the tempestuous seas as still as a stone, until the people pass over which he hath purchased. If He say, Peace be still," the most furious winds and roughest waters will subside into a perfect calm. Oh, that divine goodness. which is the best insurance office, may secure thy lading and all the lives in thee. May
