Now, when

CHAP. II. The wife men dire&ed to Chrift. Jefus was born in Beth-lehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wife men from the eaft to Jerufalem,

2 Saying, Waere is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his ftar in the eaft, and are come to worship him.

3 When Herod the king had heard these things he was troubled, and all Jerufalem with him.

4 And, when he had gathered all the chief priefts and fcribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Chrift hould be born. 5 And they faid unto him, In Beth-lehem of Judea; for thus it is written by the prophet,

6. And thou Beth-lehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out ofthee fhall come a Governor, that hall rule my people Ifrael.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wife men, enquired of them diligently what time the far appeared.

8 And he fent them o Beth-lehem, and faid, Go, and fearch diligently for the young child; and, when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

13 And, when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Jofeph in a dream, faying, Arife, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will feek the young child ́to deftroy him.

14 When he arofe, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt;

15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was fpoken of the Lord by the prophet, faying, Out of Egypt have I called my Son.

16 Then Herod, when he faw that he was mocked of the wife men, was exceeding wroth, and fent forth, and flew all the children that were in Beth-lehem, and in all the coafts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wife men.

17 Then was fulfilled that which was fpoken by Jeremy the prophet, faying,

23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was fpoken by the prophets, He thall be called a Nazarene.

CHA P. III.

Johns office, life, and baptifm. N thofe days came John the Baptift preaching in the wildernefs of Judea,

And faying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3. For this is he that was fpoken of by the prophet Efaias, faying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths Atraight.

4 And the fame John had his raiment of camels hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locufts and wild honey.

Then went out to him Jerufalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confeffing their fins.

7 But when he faw many of the pharifees and Sadducees come to his baptifm, he faid unto them, O generation of vipers! who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bring forth, therefore, fruits meet for repentance:

Io And now alfo the axe is laid unto the root ofthe trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and caf into the fire.

11 lindeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whofe fhoes I am not worthy to bear; he fhall baptize you with the Holy Ghoft, and with fire:

12 Whofe fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his flour, and gather his wheat into the gar ner: but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

131 Then cometh Jefus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John forbade him, faying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comeft thou to me?

15 And Jefus anfwering, faid unto him, Suffer it to be fo now for thus it becometh us to fulfil alf righteoufnefs. Then he suffered

16 And Jefus, when he was bap tized, went up ftraightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he faw the Spirit of God defcending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And, lo, a voice from heaven, faying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

CHA P. IV. Chrif faßeth, and is tempted, &c. THEN was Jefus led up of the fpirit into the wilderness, to be tempted of the devil.

2 And when he had fafted forty days and forty nights, he was af terward an hungered.

And when the tempter came to him, he faid, if thou be the Son of God.command that thefe ftones be made bread.

9 And think not to fay within yourfelves, We have Abraham to our father: for I fay unto you, That God is able of thefe ftones to raise 4 But he anfwered, and faid, it is written, Man fhall not live by bread
