a Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me and the LORD whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's sope, Mal. iii. 1, 2. And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve, Mark xi. 11.

b And they came to Jerusalem : and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them that sold doves, Mark xi. 15. And there came a fear on all and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us : and, That God hath visited his people, Luke vii. 16. Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, of a truth, this is the prophet, John vii. 40. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet, ix. 17. See also on chap. v. ver. 22. clause 1.

a Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever, Psal. xciii. 5. Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings, and their sacrifices, shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people, Isa. lvi. 7.

b And when he was come into the

temple, the Chief Priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? ver. 23. Then assembled together the Chief Priests, and the Scribes, and the elders of the people, into the palace of the High Priest, who was called Caiaphas, xxvi. 3. Now the Chief Priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death, 59. LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them, Isa. xxvi. 11. And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the Gospel, the Chief Priests and the Scribes came upon him with the elders, Luke xx. 1. Then gathered the Chief Priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the High Priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, John xi. 47-49.

a At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes, Matt. xi. 25. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger, Psal. viii. 2.
