ART, 68. —Flavii Arriani Nicomedienfis Opera, græce ad optimas editiones collata ftudio Augufti Chriftiani Borheck, in reg. Duisburgenfi Acad. Hift. et Eleg. P. P. O. Volumen primum. Expeditio Alexandri Magni. Lemgo, 360 pp. 8vo.

ART. 69. 2.-Notarum criticarum in Arriani Nicomedienfis de Alexan dri Magni Expeditione libros feptem Specimen primum et fecundum, auctore Friderico Schmieder, Gymn. Luth. Hal. Collega. Halle, 1795.

The editor of No. 1. informs us in the Preface, that he has collated the Venice edition of 1535, Stephens's edition of 1575, as alfo those of Gronovius and Raphelius, for the parpofe of forming from them a new and improved text. In the paffages which we have examined, we find that he has, on the whole, followed that of Gronovius, whose alterations he has likewife transferred to the text itfelf, from the places which they before occupied in the notes only. In the margin, the parallel paffages from Curtius, Diodorus Siculus, and Juftin, are pointed out. The fecond volume is to contain the Indica, the Periplus, and the Tactics, together with an hiftory of the text, geographical and hiftorical indexes, as alfo a Bibliotheca Alexandrina, or a Catalogue raisonné of all the authors who have written concerning Alexander, with their Fragments, arranged in a chronological order.

Mr. Schmieder, the author of No. 2, is likewife engaged in preparing for the prefs a new edition of Arrian, reformed in the text, partly on the authority of a MS.,which he diftinguishes by the name of Codex optimus only, and partly from his own conjectural emendations. The two fpecimens which we have now before us, and which reach to the end of the fifth book, is certainly calculated to give no unfavourable idea of the author's qualifications for this undertaking.

ART. 70. Joh. Aug. Ernefti Obfervationes philologico-criticæ in Ariftophanis Nubes et Flavii Jofephi Antiquitates Judaicas. Accefferant Godofredi Olearii Note ad Suidam. Leipzig, 1795; VI. and 322 pp. in 8vo. (1 Rixd.)

The public are indebted for thefe pofthumous obfervations of the celebrated Ernefti, to J. Ch. G. Ernefti of Leipzig, who has likewife accompanied them with a Preface.

It is well known that the late J. A. Ernefti printed, in the year 1753, an edition of the Nubes of Ariftophanes, for the ufe of academical inftruction; the chief merit of which confifts in a learned Dedication, in which the author treats of the proper application of the Scholia to critical purpofes. At that time he did not poffefs any new materials for the improvement of the text, nor did it accord with the defign of the publication, to illuftrate this play with grammatical or critical remarks, which he chofe rather to referve for his lectures. For the prefent Obfervations, however, five MSS. which had not before been examined, are collated. This, at least, is evident with respect to the Codex Leidenfis and Coiflinianus, though the editor is inclined to doubt

whether

whether the three remaining Paris MSS. (Codd. Regii) are not the fame with thofe of which Brunck has made ufe; which we, on a comparison of the various readings as they appear in thefe Obfervations, are perfuaded is not the cafe. The author has likewife added the readings of the Aldine edition, which had been fo much neglected by Küfter, as alfo fome valuable MS. notes of Ducker, which are not to be found in Bergler's edition.

The Obfervations on Jofephus remind us of the different effays on that writer, which have been reprinted in Ernelli's Opufcula Philologica, pp. 363-419. We understand from the preface to the first edition, that Ernefti had intended to prefent the public with a feparate volume of fuch learned Differtations on the Antiquities of Jofephus, both in regard to the matter and language of that important work. This plan we are not to confider as executed by the publication of thefe Obfervations, which feem to have been haftily thrown together in the early part of his life, and which muft certainly undergo a variety of alterations before they could, by a judicious critic, be in any degree placed on a level with the Remarks on Werftein's Teftament, in which he is known likewife to have been engaged. When the editor therefore fays, in his preface: nefcio an nullo in alio genere fcriptorum E. luculentiora fagaciffim judicii, acuminis critici eruditiorifque grammatice documenta exhibuerit," we can only fubfcribe to the latter part of this judgment, as far as it relates to the comparison of various passages of Jofephus with Thucydides.

Of the Notes on Suidas, we fhall only fay, that they contain many valuable hiftorical notices, intermixed, at the fame time, with much heterogeneous and irrelevant matter; as, for inftance, where the author illuftrates the Greek proverbial expreffion yára priv, by the Italian latte di gallina, &c. The Obfervations of Adrian Junius, and John Pearson, which are faid to be preferved fomewhere in England, would moft probably contribute very much to the improvement of a new edition of this Lexicographer.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Ibid.

We have received, from a gentleman of Halifax, a fhort Effay on the Daty of civil Submiffion, as inculcated in the Scriptures," printed for diftribution at the price of a penny. We believe that much good has been done by well-timed efforts of this kind, and think the tract in queftion likely to be ufeful; but cannot take up fuch publications as objects of cri ticifm. We prefume it may be had at Halifax, though no publifher, or place of fale, is mentioned.

We are much obliged to Mr. Tarleton, of Liverpool, for his friendly expreffions, and fuggeftion of publishing a generat index periodically. The plan certainly deferves confideration; but we are inclined, for feveral reafons, to think the period he propofes by far too limited.

A corref

A correfpondent, who styles himself a Gentleman of a College Education, feems entirely to have mistaken the nature of our publication; otherwife he would not have offered to fupply our "Magazines with pieces in profe and verfe."

We have received a letter from Mr. D. Suttan, the Inoculator; in which he relates what he confiders as a fact, tending entirely to overthrow the experiments of Sir William Watfon: but, as the number of children inoculated, and every other circumstance, differs totally from any thing related in Sir William's book, which we have by us, and from every thing we have heard before, we conceive that there must be fome great

error in the account.

LITERARY INTELLIGENCE.

Dr. Vincent's Account of the Voyage of Nearchus, collected from Arrian, illuftrated by geographical researches, and compared with modern difcoveries, is now printed, and will foon appear.

Mr. Langley's Hiftory of the Hundred of Desborough, in Buckingham, is in great forwardness, and will be published

in a few weeks.

The valuable Sermons of the late Dr. Owen may also be expected in a very fhort time.

Mr. Penn, whofe publications, on the fubjects of Belles Lettres, have more than once been noticed in the British Critic, is preparing a Differtation on Tragedy, and a Collection of mifcellaneous Poems.

A beautiful edition of Mufaus, with an English translation, will be publifhed within a month, from Bulmer's prefs.

Andrew Lumifden, Efq. is printing Remarks on the Antiquities of Rome and its Suburbs.

The lovers of natural history may expect a work of great value and beauty, entitled, " Specimens of British Minerals," selected from the cabinet of Mr. Rafhleigh, of Menabilly, in Cornwall.

Mr. Salisbury, of Chapel-Allerton-Hall, in Yorkshire, will foon publifh his long-expected Botanical Prodromus.

A very fuperb work, tending to illuftrate the Marine Architecture of the Ancients, to the extent of three volumes of royal quarto, is in great forwardnefs. The author is Mr. Charnock, whofe naval biography we have already commended.

A Differtation on the ancient Fables of the Eaft, will, we are informed, be fpeedily publifhed by Mr. Hole, the author of Arthur, a poetical Romance.
