HEN all Thy mercies, O my God,

W My rising soul surveys,

Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love and praise.

2 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart
That tastes those gifts with joy.
3 Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.

4 When nature fails, and day and night
Divide Thy works no more,
My ever grateful heart, O Lord,
Thy mercy shall adore.

5 Through all eternity to Thee
A joyful song I'll raise;

18

But oh! eternity's too short
To utter all Thy praise.

LORY be to God on high,

C. M.

Joseph Addison. 1712.

78.

G God, whose glory fills the sky:

Peace on earth to man forgiven,
Man, the well-beloved of Heaven.
2 Sovereign Father, heavenly King,
Thee we now presume to sing;
Glad Thine attributes confess,
Glorious all, and numberless.
3 Hail, by all Thy works adored!
Hail, the everlasting Lord!

Thee with thankful hearts we prove,
Lord of power, and God of love.

4 Christ our Lord and God we own,
Christ, the Father's only Son;
Lamb of God, for sinners slain,
Saviour of offending man!

5 Bow Thine ear, in mercy bow,
Hear, the world's Atonement Thou!
Jesus, in Thy Name we pray,
Take, O take our sins away!

6 Hear, for Thou, O Christ, alone,
Art with Thy great Father One;
One the Holy Ghost with Thee;
One supreme, eternal Three.

THE strain upraise of joy and praise,

2 To the glory of their King

Alleluia.

Shall the ransomed people sing, Alleluia.

3 And the choirs that dwell on high

Shall re-echo through the sky, Alleluia.

4 They through the fields of Paradise that roam, The blessed ones, repeat through that bright Alleluia.

home,

5 The planets glittering on their heavenly way, The shining constellations, join, and say

6 Ye clouds that onward sweep, Ye winds, on pinions light,

Alleluia.

Ye thunders, echoing loud and deep,
Ye lightnings, wildly bright,
In sweet consent unite your

7 Ye floods and ocean billows,

Ye storms and winter snow,

Alleluia.

Ye days of cloudless beauty,
Hoar frost and summer glow,
Ye groves that wave in spring,
And glorious forests, sing

Alleluia.

8 First let the birds, with painted plumage gay, Exalt their great Creator's praise, and say

Alleluia.

9 Then let the beasts of earth with varying strain, Join in Creation's Hymn, and cry again,

10 Here let the mountains thunder forth sonorous,

Alleluia.

[blocks in formation]

12 To God, Who all creation made, The frequent hymn be duly paid :

Alleluia.

Alleluia.

13 This is the strain, the eternal strain, the Lord of all things loves:

Alleluia.

This is the song, the heavenly song, that Christ
Himself approves:

Alleluia.

14 Wherefore we sing, both heart and voice

awaking,

Alleluia.

And children's voices echo, answer making,

15 Now from all men be outpoured

Alleluia to the Lord;

With Alleluia evermore

The Son and Spirit we adore.

Alleluia.

16 Praise be done to the Three in One. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia !

Tr. John Mason Neale. 1854.

Alleluia, dulce Carmen.

LLELUIA! best and sweetest
Of the hymns of praise above!
Alleluia! thou repeatest,

Angel host, these notes of love.
This ye utter,

While your golden harps ye move.

2 Alleluia! Church victorious,
Join the concert of the sky!
Alleluia! bright and glorious,
Lift, ye saints, this strain on high!
We, poor exiles,

Join not yet your melody.

3 Alleluia! strains of gladness
Suit not souls with anguish torn:
Alleluia! sounds of sadness
Best become our state forlorn:
Our offences

We with bitter tears must mourn.

4 But our earnest supplication,
Holy God, we raise to Thee:
Visit us with Thy salvation,
Make us all Thy joys to see!
Alleluia !

Ours at length this strain shall be.

PETITION.

Splendor Paternæ Gloria.

JESUS, Lord of heavenly grace,

L. M.

Thou Brightness of Thy Father's face,

Thou Fountain of eternal light,

Whose beams disperse the shades of night!

2 Come, holy Son of heavenly love,
Send down Thy radiance from above;
And to our inmost hearts convey
The Holy Spirit's cloudless ray.

3 And we the Father's help will claim,
And sing the Father's glorious Name:
His powerful succor we implore,
That we may stand, to fall no more.
4 May He our actions deign to bless,
And loose the bonds of wickedness;
From sudden falls our feet defend,
And guide us safely to the end.
5 May faith, deep rooted in the soul,
The flesh subdue, the mind control:
May guile depart, and discord cease,
And all within be joy and peace.
6 O hallowed thus be every day!
Let meekness be our morning ray,
And faithful love our noonday light,
And hope our sunset, calm and bright.
7 O Christ, with each returning morn,
Thine image to our hearts is borne:
O may we ever clearly see

Our Saviour and our God in Thee!

Ambrose. d. 397.

Tr. John Chandler. 1837. a.

Zeige Dich uns ohne Hülle.

ORD, remove the veil away,
Let us see Thyself to-day!

Thou Who camest from on high,
For our sins to bleed and die,
Help us now to cast aside

All that would our hearts divide ;
With the Father and the Son

Let Thy living Church be one.
