Arrayed in robes of light,
Begirt with sovereign might,
And rays of majesty around.

2 Upheld by thy commands,
The world securely stands,
And skies and stars obey thy word:
Thy throne was fixed on high
Before the starry sky:
Eternal is thy kingdom, Lord!

3 Let floods and nations rage,
And all their powers engage;
Let swelling tides assault the sky :
The terrors of thy frown

Shall beat their madness down: Thy throne for ever stands on high.

4 Thy promises are true;

Thy grace is ever new;

There fixed, thy church shall ne'er remove:
Thy saints, with holy fear,
Shall in thy courts appear,
And sing thine everlasting love.

110.

"Praise ye Him, all His hosts.”—Psalm 148.

1 BEGIN, my soul, th' exalted lay;
Let each enraptured thought obey,
And praise th' Almighty's name :
Lo! heaven and earth, and seas and skies,
In one melodious concert rise,

To swell th' inspiring theme.

2 Ye angels, catch the thrilling sound,
While all th' adoring throngs around
His boundless mercy sing:
Let every listening saint above
Wake all the tuneful soul of love,
And touch the sweetest string.

3 Let every element rejoice;
Ye thunders, burst with awful voice

To him who bids you roll:
His praise in softer notes declare,
Each whispering breeze of yielding air,
And breathe it to the soul.

4 Wake, all ye soaring throngs, and sing; Ye feathered warblers of the spring,

Harmonious anthems raise

To him who shaped your finer mold, Who tipped your glittering wings with gold,

And tuned your voice to praise.

5 Let man, by nobler passions swayed, Let man, in God's own image made, His breath in praise employ;

WATTS. L. M.

109. "To-day, if ye will hear His voice."

Psalm 95.

1 COME, let our voices join to raise
A sacred song of solemn praise:
God is a sovereign King; rehearse
His honors in exalted verse.

2 Come, let our souls address the Lord,
Who framed our natures with his word:
He is our Shepherd, we the sheep
His mercy chose, his pastures keep.
3 Come, let us hear his voice to-day;
The counsels of his love obey;
Nor let our hardened hearts renew
The sins and plagues that Israel knew.
4 Seize the kind promise while it waits,
And march to Zion's heavenly gates:
Believe, and take the promised rest;
Obey, and be for ever blest.

111. "While I live will I praise the Lord."

Psalm 146.

1 PRAISE ye the Lord! my heart shall join
In work so pleasant, so divine:

My days of praise shall ne'er be passed,
While life, and thought, and being last.

2 Happy the man, whose hopes rely
On Israel's God: he made the sky,

His mercy ages past have known,
And ages long to come shall own.

2 Let the redeeméd of the Lord
The wonders of his
grace record;
Israel, the nation, whom he chose,
And rescued from their mighty foes.
3 He feeds and clothes us all the way,
He guides our footsteps lest we stray;
He guards us with a powerful hand,
And brings us to the heavenly land.
4 Oh, let the saints with joy record
The truth and goodness of the Lord!
How great his works! how kind his ways!
Let every tongue pronounce his praise.
157. Providence and Grace of God.—Psalm 36.
1 HIGH in the heavens, eternal God!
Thy goodness in full glory shines;
Thy truth shall break thro' every cloud
That vails and darkens thy designs.

2 For ever firm thy justice stands,

As mountains their foundations keep: Wise are the wonders of thy hands; Thy judgments are a mighty deep.

And earth, and seas, with all their train; 3 My God, how excellent thy grace!

And none shall find his promise vain.

3 His truth for ever stands secure;

He saves th' oppressed, he feeds the poor;
He helps the stranger in distress,
The widow and the fatherless.

4 He loves his saints, he knows them well,
But turns the wicked down to hell:
Thy God, O Zion, ever reigns;
Praise him in everlasting strains.
154. "Oh, that men would praise the Lord for

His goodness!"-Psalm 107.

1 GIVE thanks to God; he reigns above; Kind are his thoughts, his name is love:

Whence all our hope and comfort springs;

The sons of Adam, in distress,

Fly to the shadow of thy wings.

4 From the provisions of thy house
We shall be fed with sweet repast;
There, mercy, like a river, flows,

And brings salvation to our taste.

5 Life, like a fountain, rich and free,
Springs from the presence of my Lord;
And in thy light our souls shall see
The glories promised in thy word.

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.
2 Awake, lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who all night long unwearied sing
High praises to th' eternal King.
3 Glory to thee, who safe hast kept,

And hast refreshed me while I slept;
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

4 Lord, I my vows to thee renew:

Scatter my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with thyself my spirit fill.
5 Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

That all my powers, with all their might,
In thy sole glory may unite.

5 Lord, let my soul for ever share The bliss of thy paternal care! 'Tis heaven on earth, 't is heaven above, To see thy face, and sing thy love.

6 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

160.

"Slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy." Psalm 103.

1 My soul, inspired with sacred love, God's holy name for ever bless! Of all his favors mindful prove,

And still thy grateful thanks express.
2 The Lord abounds with tender love,
And unexampled acts of grace;
His wakened wrath doth slowly move,
His willing mercy flies apace.

3 As high as heaven its arch extends
Above this little spot of clay,
So much his boundless grace transcends
The best obedience we can pay.

4 As far as 't is from east to west,

So far has he our sins removed, Who, with a father's tender breast, Has such as fear him always loved. 5 Let every creature join to bless

The mighty Lord! and thou, my heart, With grateful joy thy thanks express, And in this concert bear thy part.

1 FAR as thy name is known,

The world declares thy praise;
Thy saints, O Lord, before thy throne,
Their songs
of honor raise.

2 With joy thy people stand

On Zion's chosen hill,

Proclaim the wonders of thy hand,

And counsels of thy will.

3 Let strangers walk around
The city where we dwell,
Compass and view thine holy ground,
And mark the building well-

4 The order of thy house,

The worship of thy court,

The cheerful songs, the solemn vows;
And make a fair report.

5 How decent, and how wise!

How glorious to behold!

Beyond the pomp that charms the eyes,
And rites adorned with gold.

6 The God we worship now

Will guide us till we die;

Will be our God, while here below,
And ours above the sky.

[blocks in formation]

Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought, but never found!

4 How blessed are our eyes,

That see this heavenly light!
Prophets and kings desired it long,
But died without the sight.

5 The watchmen join their voice,
And tuneful notes employ;
Jerusalem breaks forth in songs,
And deserts learn the joy.
6 The Lord makes bare his arm
Through all the earth abroad:
Let every nation now behold
Their Saviour and their God.
"The Head-stone of the corner."
Psalm 118.

1027.

1 SEE what a living stone

The builders did refuse!

Yet God hath built his church thereon,
In spite of envious Jews.

2 The scribe and angry priest

Reject thine only Son;

Yet on this rock shall Zion rest,

As the chief corner-stone.

3 The work, O Lord, is thine,
And wondrous in our eyes:
This day declares it all divine;
This day did Jesus rise.
4 This is the glorious day

That our Redeemer made:

Let us rejoice, and sing, and pray;
Let all the church be glad.

5 Hosanna to the King,

Of David's royal blood!

Bless him, ye saints! he comes to bring
Salvation from your God.

6 We bless thine holy word,

Which all this grace displays,
And offer on thine altar, Lord,
Our sacrifice of praise.
