we have too much reason to fear that the awful irony, of the land being left through desolation to enjoy her sabbaths, may shadow forth some corresponding judgment that is awaiting us. It is chiefly, however, as individuals, that we are interested in this and every other portion of the word of God. Let every one apply to himself, in reference to it, the admonition of the Apostle, "Let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall*:" yea, not content with avoiding falls, by which we might dishonour the holy Name by which we are called, let us consider how we can do most honour to that holy Name. selves, individually, to bear in Let us charge our mind the obligations under which we lie, to an unreserved and willing obedience to all the commandments of God our Saviour. Let it not be our reproach, as Christians, that our spirit and conduct are exceeded by the spirit and conduct of any who have not been called into the fellowship of the Gospel: but let us aspire after higher attainments than are to be expected from any other principles than those which we profess; 1 Cor. x. 12. remembering, that our Lord has said, "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit:" and," Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven†.". As He who hath called us is holy, so let us aspire to be holy, in all manner of conversation. Let us study in all things to adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Giving all diligence, let us add unto our faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity; that so it may be evident to all, whose we are, and whom we desire to serve.-To Him be glory! *John xv. 8. |
